NEW YORK, December 12.—Un- even price movements character ized this week’s financial and se- curities markets. Stock prices gathered strength as the week progressed, but soft spots cropped out in various sec- tions of the list as professional traders who had bought stocks “for a turn” cashed in their profits. The upward movement was ac celerated by the favorable resumes of the business situation made by President Coolidge and Secretary Mellon in thelr communications to Congress, by an unexpectedly large increase in the unfilled orders of the United States Steel (orpos tion, by the retention of the 31 per cent rediscount rate by the New York Federal Reserve Bank and by a serles of favorable divi- dend announcements. FINDS FRENCHWOMEN NOW LESS EMOTIONAL Barnhardt's Granddaughter | Sees Explanation in Changed Status of Sex. By the Associated Press. PARIS, Deember 12. lane Bern- hardt, granddaughter of Sarah Bern- hardt, says she has discovered that women no longer weep in theaters and has been seeking the explanation of this change. She remembers how, when her grandmother played Mar- guerite Gauthler, the sad fate of the lady with the camelias brought tears streaming from the eyes of almost every woman in the theater and caused much sniffling among the male part of the audience. For the passing of such emotional displays she advances two explana tions.” Late supper and dancing par- tles are now the usual sequel to an evening at the theater and women tr to avold going to them with red eves and noses. But the fundamental rea- son, she says, lles in the changed status of women in France since the war. They have achieved a measure of independence and with it self-con- ing in displays of weakness that might mark them Inferior to men. Mile. Bernhardt regrets this change. She says emotion is good for women and prevents their natures being choked by egotism and sclfishness. HIGH COST OF LIQUOR REDUCES D. T. CASES Investigation in Copenhagen Shows Partial Prohibition Works Well. COPENHAGEN, December 9.—The high cost of liquor has decreased the number of delirium tremens cases in hagen from 321 in 1910 to 24 in Dr. A. Wimmer, professor of evchiatry of the University of Co- penhagen, who hae investigated the liquor situation in this city, says that the reduction is entirely in the clas of people who were not confirmed drinkers. The heavy drinking is now being done by the chronic habitual drinkers, by feeble-minded and epileptics and by hopathic degenerates. The casual drinker has become very moderate since the passing of the law in 1917 that resulted in the raising of the price of liquor. The change in the character of the inmates committed to institutions Yor alcoholism since the anti-alcohod leg- islation is characteristic of France and Germany as well as of Denmark, Wimmer claims. Total prohibition would not make the degenerate nor- mal, and it would be pre Dosterous t it on the entire pobulation in order to benefit the com. paratively few chronic habitual drinker: g8 ITALIANS WISH LONG LIFE TO TWO. ALREADY DEAD | Lenin, Matteotti and Mussolini Names Scrawled on Walls to Show Esteem. ROME, November 23 (By Maill.— Many walls in the streets of almost every Italtan city and village from the Alps to Sieily are covered with painted scrawls wishing long life to three men—two of them dead. The dead are Lenin and Matteotti. The third is very much alive—Mussolini. For centuries it has been the Italian cus- tom to scribble political opinions on unresisting walls. The letter W. which i3 an abbreviation for “Viva, means “Long may he live!” Its in- verss, M, thus slgnifies “Down with him!” The inscriptions are rarely erased, but often M s painted over W, or vice versa. Some are highly dramatic: “Masonry must die!” “Death to the enemies of Fasclsm!” or, especially in the vil- lages, “All who fail to vote for Fascist candidates are known to us’" For months there was visible on one of the boulevards of Rome, “Death to Mussolini” But gradually Lenin and Matteotti -are fading out of sight. Their place is being taken by a new hero: “Farinacci, long may he live!” BALTIMORE LIVE STOCK.
