DEALINGS IN COTTON AWAIT CROP REPORT Quiet New York Market Featured Only by Covering and Trade Buying. By the Associated Press. NEW YORK, August 22.—T on market was qualet again today, with traders evidently waiting for Monday's Government report. De- cember contracts were traded in at prices ranging from 2362 to 23.70 and closed at 23.63, with the general mar- ket closing net unchanged to 2 points higher. The opening was steady at an ad- vance of 5 to 9 points and the active positions sold about 7 to 11 points net higher during the early trading, with October selling up to 23.48 and January to 23.21 Buying was pgo- moted by relatively steady Liverpool cables, more favorable advices from Manchester and continued appre- hensions of crop damage reports from the Eastern belt. In addition to covering, some-trade buying was reported, but there was enough for sale to check the advanee and prices eased later on private re- ports of showers in north Texas and the lower temperatures in the belt. October sold off to 28.37 and January o 23.13 and the close was within a oint or two of the lowest. Some buving was promoted by the outlook for dry and warmer weather following the lower temperatures of yesterday and last night, but general business was restricted and _the market acted as if accounts had been pretty well evened up in preparation for Monday's Government crop re- port. Another private report estimated & condition of 64 and an indicated yield of 14,450,000 bales, but this was nearly enough in line with previous estimates to have comparatively little effect on sentiment Manchester cables said that spin- ners in the Bolton district had voted to reject the recommendation of short time in the Egyptian section. Trade advices from Liverpool said the market there had been advanced by covering and trade calling. BALTIMORE, August 22°(Special). ~The egg market continues to hold steady under light receipts of native and nearby stock and prices have shown little change from day to day, opening r.t 33 and 34 cents a dozen on Monday and closing today at 32 and 33 for strictly fresh firsts in free cases. Buyers, however, are very critical as to quality, and it takes strictly fancy stock to bring top prices. Pfompt and regular shipments are advisable, as the loss off is quite a factor on nearby receipts, and more careful grading would aid materially in movement of daily receipts. Summer Daylight Reception Certain. The success of radio communica- tion between the Navy-MacMillan ex pedition and the United States during {the time when the ships are in the area of continual daylight seems as. wured now that long-distance, short wave messages have been easily dled each way in daylight. A. A. Collins, owner of station 9CXX, in Cedar Rapids. lowa, has carried out two-way commun: with the expedition. Station of the Bowdoin, opet Reinartz, principal proponent of the daylight short-wave theories, first es tablished communication with the Cedar Rapids station on a wave length of 18 meters. The Collins sta- tion worked on 20 meters. work was carried on in WNP han- | ation | ated by John L. | midafternoon at a time when the Bowdoin was well inside the line of continual Summer daylight. The ease with which the communication was accomplished would seem to indicate that this year's expedition will not enccunter ‘any of the troubles tbat beset the 1923-1924 cruise. As another indication of the re. liability of the short-wave work, Rein- artz, in the course of his conversation with Collins, reported that he had been able to log a number of Amer. ican stations working on the 20-meter band.
