D. JULY 12, 1925—PART 3. e R ey e A N R THE SUNDAY STAR, WASHINGTON, C., DOWN THE ROAD-—Exasperating Moments of a Motorist. . —By BECK NEW AUTO FINISH 1S MORE DURABLE Pyroxylin - Base Materials’ Early Obstacles Are Now Overcome. WHEN YOUR NICE BlG BlUS GETS OVER-HEATED ON A GRADE AND ALL THE LITTLE CARS WHIZ RIGHT PAST You—— DopseBRrROTHERS SPEClIAL cCoAaCH Already a familiar and attractive sight on all roads. For one thing, the Special Coach really accommodates five adult passengers in comfort. And then the body lines and special ap- pointments are singularly smart. Lia The durability of finish must suit the use to which an article is put, ac- cording to H. G. Mougey, who writes in the July issue of the Journal of the Society of Automotive Engineers. Mr. Mougey, who make; he ob- servation that if planos were parked at the curb and automobiles always stood in houses the durability of their finishes would have to be reversed, declares further that the cracking of varnish finishes may be caused by the drying and contraction of the top coats over insufficiently dried under coats. Moreover, when exposed out of doors the entire film absorbs moisture from rain, mist or dew and swells and soft. ens. Then when the sun comes out the top coat dries and contracts, and if the material is not sufficiently elastic to withstand the stresses cracks develop. Moisture and direct sunlight are the prinecipal causes’of the severity of out. side exposure, and the durability of finishes can be increased by reducing | the severity of these factors. Life Can Be Increased. Tests have shown that if coler and rubbing varnishes of high durability are used an increase of from two to four times the life of ordinary produc. tion finishes can be obtained. They require a long time for air drying, however, and if an attempt is made to shorten the time by forced drying there is great danger of injuring the color For these reasons a material that will air-dry quickly, that can be rubbed to a sinooth finish and that is very durable is desired. It has been found that certain cellulose nitrate materials possess these qualities, the evaporation of the solvents when thesa materials are applied over suitable un- der coats leaving a film that is hard tough and very durable. By nature the pyroxyvlin film is much less ab- sorbent of moisture th; is the varnish film, and the particl of pigment, which are used p v for their Five Balloon Tires 81195 f.o.b.
