Just what the improvement will mean to the rallroad was explained recently by Robert Trimble, company engineer, who said it would speed up passenger traffic in and around Pitt hurgh and would do away with de- ays that through trai experien on the smoky city. To the senger traffic will be speeded up freight traffic also will benefit, Mr Trimble said, although the new track and improvements will have no direct bearing on this part of the system’s operations The first thing that will be under- taken will be the straightening of Grant street. This thoroughfare starts on a straight line from the main business section of Pittsburgh toward the Pennsylvania terminal. When it reaches Seventh avenue, however, it seems to terminate, for standing in front of it is a freight house. Despite appearahces, however, Grant street goes on, but it is nec sary to go dGown Seventh avenue a short distance before the elusive thor- oughfare is picked up again, Street to Be Widened. Under the railroad's plan the ob- structive freight house will be Te moved and Grant street will continue unhindered on its course to the ter- minal. On the last stretch, from Seventh avenue to the station, the street will be widened from 60 to 80} feet On the east side of this new tho oughfare, indications point to the po: sibility of a new post office for Pi burgh. The Government had held a site on Liberty avenue for this pu pose, but the railroad needed this space for new tracks in connect with the improvement. A deal was effected whereby the spaces were traded. On elther side of the station prope Al the present time, are sever: tracks. Correspondence of the Associated Press. NOME, Alaska, February 26.—Fox farming fast being adopted by prospectors and trappers of the Seward Peninsula as an additional means of making a livelihood, and promises good profits. A large number of permits have been granted by the Secretary of Agriculture to capture litters of fox pups with the mothers, to establish fox farms, and many litters of from 5 to 16 pups have been found. The other way of starting a farm s to buy breeding stock. This method is followed by those who wish to raise blue or silver foxes, as only white foxes are found here. It is necessary to ship the blue and sil- ver foxes from southeatsern Alaska to Seattle and thence here. One farm at Shismaref, on the Arctic Ocean side of the Seward Peninsula, has 51 vairs of blue foxes which were ship- ved from southeastern Alaska to Nome through Seattle, and trans- shipped from here on an Arctic Ocean vessel. The animals weathered the trip well and are said to be thriving. Attempts were made to raise foxes on small islands to avoid the expense of fencing, but this was found im- practicable in the Behring Sea and north of it because the animals es caped when the sea froze.
