By the Associated Press HOLLYWOOD, Calif.. March 16.— Sergt. Sam Dreben. 47, soldier of fortune and American war hero, plc- turesque figure of Mexican and Cen- tral American revolutions and friend of Gen. Pershing, died here yesterday. Though Dreben had been i1l for sev- eral months, his death came unex- pectedly. He collapsed in a doctor's office Saturday while undergoing treatment and died without regaining consciousness. Dreben fought on scores of battle- flelds, sometimes as an American sol- dler, sometimes as-a free lance. Perhaps his greatest exploit was the World War feat that won him the distinguished service cross. In October, 1818, in the last great offen- sive of the war, Dreben was sent out at the head of a small detachment of volunteers to dislodge a force of Ger- mans blocking the American advance near St. Etiennc. Before he led his men back they killed 58 Germans, captured 4 machine guns and took 2 prisoners. Of his own men, not one was wounded.
