FEATURES. Children’s Clubs Jolly and Helpful. BY LYDIA LE BARON WALKER. THE EVENING STAR, WASHINGTON, D. C, MONDAY, MARCH 16, 1925. KEEPING UP WITH THE JONESES—Ample Proof. What TomorrowMeans to You BY MARY BLAKE. Pisces. Tomorrow, according to the planetary aspects, a sense of exhilaration and, possibly, undue enthusiasm will pre- vail. The emotions will be very deep- ly moved, whereas common. sense will not be so forcefully present as is usual- ly necessary for deliberate and con- crete action. Only matters which have heen carefully deliberated should re- celve attention, and thing that ie based on either impulse or intuition should be eliminated from consideration, and all action thereon stalled. 1f, how- ever, there is available for consumma- tion a well conceived and deliberately thought-out plan, no better occasion for its prosecution could be found, as in- dications denote optimism, and the vi- brations engender stimulation and en- couragement. As appearances are often misleading, there is a strong probability that the child born tomorrow will not Inspire hopefulness or satisfaction. The signs, however, indicate that, physically, it will be endowed with great powers of resistance and endurance which will enable it to survive its many infan- tile aflments, and attain a normal ma- turity. Its disposition will be attractive, and 1t will be anxious—perhaps, a lit- tle too much so—to please all, and give offense to none. Its character, while built on a firm foundation, will not have a superstructure strong enough to render it proof against disappoint- ment or temporary failure. It will waver under disappointment, and wilt under failure. Those who tomorrow celebrate the anniversary of their birth are. for the most part, in doubt and perplexity as to the course that they should adopt over a matter that has been troubling them for some time. Thereby their invariable inability to reach a quick and correct decision Is again made apparent, especially, as in this par- ticular problem, their inclinations and desires point one way, whereas the rigid requirements of duty lead in an- other direction. 1f they were blessed with decision and force of character, there will be no hesitation. They would keep to the highway—regardless of its rough, uneven aspect—and not seek a “detour,” no matter how much more alluring the latter appears to be +welLL THE OLD LADY'S TRIED EVERY THI\WWG To HELP HER LOSE SonE OF HER ExQESS BAGGAGE, BUT SHE'S STl 178 PounD 3! tMAy BE THIS Sonk WL Do ™ TRick " HELP—MALE WANTED_SALESMEN, YE3 BELLA DONNA TH' JALESNAN. Those who can look back upon a Shappy childhood usually have the rec- ollection of some sort of youthful club that figured largely. From the time that little girls play “house,” and little boys “Indians,” there is joy in com- panionship with those of their own ages. When “house” and “Indian’ are outgrown and befare the more grown- up pleasures are reached, it is the ideal | time for the much loved “club,” of | whatever sort it is, to take precedence. Regardless of the nature of the club, the very idea of it appeals to the young- er generation. Are not the fathers and mothers, uncles and aunts, members of various clubs of which they speak with pride? Clubs, therefore, are to these a part of that superior world in which grown people move, and so to be emulated. To recognize this in- the girls of the club to contribute enough dishes of their own cooking to constitute a meal. It is sure that the meal will be one that they will be in a humor to enjoy. If the food is not of the most elaborate that will matter little to. them, and their mistakes in preparing it will not only ba part of the fun, but some- thing by which they will profit. One must co-operate yet not seem to interfere, suggest but not dictate, for the essence of joy in the club for the young folks is that they believe it their own in- spiration, and of their chosen design. Choice of Girls' Club. Perhaps the children, for so we will call them, as they range in.ages from about 8 to 14, have the initiative to at- tempt to organize the club themselves. If they are girls, it is likely that the club will take the form of a cooking or sewing club. Here is a splendid op- portunity for the mother to co-operate. The cooking, more than the sewing club, can be made very active and in- teresting, especially if the mothers of the girls at whose homes it meets will give them occasionally the freedom of the kitchen, choosing a day when the maid is out. Although the maid may be out, it is decidedly advisable that mothers be in—not necessariiy in the kitehen all of the time, but within 1each and frequently in sight, so that she can Eive suggestions when asked and volun- teer a helping hand. A practical and agreeable plan is for *he | be supplied by these the recipes are written and taken home, At each meeting where the meal is as- sembled it iy well to plan, in a general way, the menus for the next, in ordec that there may be no duplication. What- ever each girl brings, if it is only choco- late carried in a vacuum bottle, it should be something of her own making. The only exception to this should be bread. Even this is not beyond the ability of girls of 12 and 13, however. Or they can make very delicious raised biscuit as well as the various baking powder biscuits and breads so quickly done. Suggestions for menus will be sent to any desiring them who accom- pany their request with self-addr:ssed and stamped envelope. Variety. of Interests. Other forms which clubs for girls may take are mending clubs, at which some older persons read aloud. Sewing clubs may have for their object the making of things for a bazaar, the proceeds of which shall contribute to some benevo- lent end. There are dramatic clubs, too, and, especially for boys, although girls also may enjoy them, there are hiking clubs Such eacred rites as passwords and the wearing of club pins and badges are strong in their appeal to the younger generation, and are as harmless as they are inexpensive. RAMBLES BY RIPLEY AROUND SOUTH AMERICA First Day. ANTA LUT Grace Line, gone and 1 S January am on my way T stood shivering at the rail until the twinkling peaks of Manhattan's moun- tainous skyline dissolved into the sleet and snow and faded away like fairy castles built upon the clouds. Now I am inside the smokeroom try- ing to get warm the best way I know— which is not a bad way at all—and con- soling myself with the thought that the climate will be mild and well mannered in South America. It is Summer there, 1 am glad to know—BUT THAT IS ABOUT ALL I DO KNOW ABOUT IT. It is surprising how little Americans know about their sister continent. I know that I was surprised at myself. We cling tenaciously to the Old World, and seem completely to ignore our fair companion in the new one. Let me quote from a pamphlet here at hand: “South America claims — without dispute—the finest city on the globe— Rio de Janeiro; the world's highest capi- tal—La Paz; the mightiest of rivers— the Amazon: the world's most mys- terious lake—Titicaca, in which steel will not rust. “It furnishes the nitrates that make fertile the great farms of North Amer- jca and Europe; the rubber from which our automobile tires are made; the cof: fee that makes breakfast a meal and the beef that makes dinner a delight, and it offers as an entertainment the elics of the marvelous ancient civiliza- tion of the Incas.” I think that I will find/many things of interest in my ramble around South America. I am going down the west coast and return up the east coast, stop- Ping off now and then as the. spirit moves me. 1 will write and draw each day’s happenings for you. Here's hoping that they will interest you. My Neighbor Says: If brushing will not remove mud stains from a garment, rub them with a raw potato, When broiling a whole fish broil first on flesh side until done and then broil the skin side until brown and crisp. Slices of fish should be turned often when broiling. Fasten the snaps of a garment together before putting the arti- cle through the wringer. The easiest way to peel a pine- apple is to fill a kettle or a pail a little larger than the pineapple with boiling water. Into this plunge the pineapple, completely covering it with the water. Allow it to remain for about five minutes. Remove from the water and cut it into slices one- half inch thick. Then peel and cut out the eyes. It will peel almost as easily as a potato. While peeling the first one, immerse another pineapple in the water, which must be kept at the boiling point, just warm water won't do the work. This does not in- jure the flavor of the fruit nor soften !the inside, for children while BUSINESS INSTRUCTION WANTED—THOSE WHO ARE PLANNING to take Oivil Service examinations as clerk will do well to join special class now forming.
