GRENOBLE, France, February 7.— Whether the Socialist deputies in the f*rench chamber, numbering 105, wiil continue to support the government of Premier Herriot Is the main issue before the congress of the Socialist party which opens here tomorrow. A Koclallst secession would mean the downfall of M. Herriot. Extremists in the party find much to criticize In what they call t “opportunist tactics” to which the So clalist group in the chamber has re- peatedly resorted. The voting of the placarding of the premier's security tpeech, which they considered “as re- actionary and as far to the Right as £ny Poincare ever pronounced,” was # bitter pill for the extremists to swallow. In order to maintain the govern- ment in power the Sociallsts were forced to vote for an anathema to Bocialist orthodoxy—namely, secret police funds. They also had to accept A lukewarm amnesty bill and approve the partial Vatican representation measure. There is considerable dis- content, and the leaders in the cham- ber will face here the charge of sell- dng the party’s birthright for a mess ©f bourgeois pottage. The outlook is that the congress, Rfter a heated debate, will vote to vontinue its support of M. Herriot, whose downfall would mean a gov- ernment of the Center. CORDOBA, Argentine, January 2.— Dona Mercedes Martinez de Alvarez ©f this city, having reported to the Police that she had been robbed of an earring worth $400, was requested to loan them the other earring to help the detectives in identifying the stolen one and running down the thief.
