The new campulsory sch gance and school census b y the board of education was dis- cussed at a meeting of the executive committee of the Consumers' League of the District Wednesday afternoon at 1022 11th street. Among those ¥ho spoke on the measure were Mrs. Walter Ufford, Mrs. Edward Costigan, Dr. John A. Ryan, Miss Natalie Mat- thows and Miss Sarah Ban Gundy. While far in advance of the present school attendance law, the new legis- lation proposed, it _was pointed out, will not bring the District up to the standards in many of the states. The mew bill will make attendance at school compulsory up to the age of sixteen years. In eight states, it was sald, attendance at school is required np to the age of eighteen vears, in five other states up to the. age of Seventeen years; twenty-eight states to the age of sixteen years, and one state to fifteen years.
