Better Homes Week, May 11-18 . During this week all Amer- ica will devote its time to dis- cussing not only the planning, || building and furnishing of Bet- ter Homes, but economic methods of running them. In Better Homes today, the Re- frigerator is of paramount im- portance. It is known to be necessary to comfort and health. And in the economic running of the home, a regular supply of ice is recognized as first aid in saving foods and in keeping them sweet and healthful. Heads, ~ EXPLAINS SCHOOL PROBLEMS Defends Gag Rule Before Park View Citizens. The powers of.the District Commis- sioner should be curtailed rather than enlarged, especially with matters per- taining to the board of education and the school system, Julius Peyser told members of the Park View Citizens’ Assoclation and the Park View Parent- Teacher Assoclation, in joint meet- ing at the Park View School last night. Any increase in power should be vested in the people, he said, and hoped the time was near when the board of education would be elected by direct, vote. Peyser said the District school sys- tem is a model which communities all over the country would do well to imitate, and urged that the pride held for the em be voiced in demand- ing the employment of the best edu- cafors in the country to instruct the children in_ Washington in modern fashion, and not from books of an- cient date. He said he fears the teaching of American history and civics was slipping out of the sys- tem. English and Histery. Too many foreign inroads are being made into the school system, he sai’ and advocated the teaching of Eng- lish through the elghth grade so that the children may know the language in which the Constitution is printed. He urged the teaching of incidents in history, such as the Boston tea party over .Ind over again, affording the pupils a better insight into the foun- dation on which the country is built. He asked the associations to for- give the mistakes of the board of education and support it in its fight for better school facilities for their children. He laid blame for most of the delays and inconveniences caused the school board to the Commission- ers and said the present teachers’ bill in Congress would have been lost had they awaited the pleasure of the Com- missioners, who opposed it. He com- mended the platoon tem in opera- tion in the Park View School. Wants Matrons in Schools. Peyser favored better lighting and sanitary conditions in the schools and hoped to have a matron placed in all schools where girls attend.
