L3 Y og " Late Arrivals and Smart Store News of Today BY ETHEL M. PARKS To dress cool, comfortably and in good taste is the problem confront- ing every woman, particularly resi- dents of Washington who may not get away until the middle of the summer, and some who may, per- haps, not get away at all. Summer days and summer affairs at the country clubs, golf, tennis, motor trips and luations — all demand their own particular kind of togs. Good taste and good style means dressing in keeping with the occasion, and the clothes this sum- mer are so attractive for each one, and so inexpensive, that one can begin to take a new interest—after the skyrocketing prices of war time. To be quite in the mode there must be a touch of red in the costume. Right now it is the striking bit of color in the prevailing black cos- tumes. As summer advances it will be seen as a combination of red and white. Perhaps this is why the red gardenia is a close rival of the white, and is quite the newest thing in imitation flowers. Simnrlicity continues to be the key- note of the latest fashions. Even the French designers now admit that American ready-made clothes are the best of their kind. Of course, they make that admission with the qualifying remark. “If you cannot afford French models.” Lingerie has taken on a new im- portance. It must be in straight, unruffled lines, and only the sheerest materials are pleated and these are sometimes stitched. Lace, of course, is the favorite trimming on lingerie as well as dresses. Practically all lingerie is of silk nowadays, and that is not as extravagant as it sounds. Most wemen have found that it is absolutely practical, and the slightly higher cost in the beginning is justi- fied, because it wenrs so well and is so easily laundered. Ostrich is ouite the vogue as a trimmine on the shzer, dainty dance frocks. Ecru ond crecm colored laces, combined with rhiffon or georm- ette, make some of the most adorahle little frocks. Sometimes the chiffon is of all the .olors of the rainbow under lace or embroidered net. Lovely white dresses of voiles and crepe de chine, combined with laces and fine tucking, arc all that could be dz.n'ud_ for graduations and navy, peach and several school functions. new blues. Of rourse, one must have a Sports Coat for the motor trip and all the other occasions when only such a coat will do. They come in attrac- tive stripes and plaids, in all the latest cuts. Then. there are the sleeveless Sport Suits, of Botany flannel. the last word in a practical and at the same time fascinating sport suit. They come in all the lovely new shades of green, leather, copen, etc. The Palais Royal was the first to show these sleeveless models this Spring, and the demand has been enormous. Then, there is a new all-rubber corset, which is guaranteed to add greatly to the joy of sports, because of the comfort and ease of motion it permits. “They do say,” too, that it reduces one while you wear it, and 1 suppose it is true that any woman will do or wear almost anything to gain the popular stvaightline sil- houette. If do not believe that reducing is the great national indoor sport of today, just listen to the con- versation of any group «." women. The summer holds no terrors for the woman who anticipates the hot weather and selects a variety of cool, suitable clothes while the cool days permit of comfortable shopping.
