JEHOTADA'S VICTORY OVER BAAL.—1 Kings. 14.21-15.23, 21. Golden Text: Be strong in the Lord, and in the strength of His might.—Ephesians, 6.10. Mother's day recalls the world' debt to the noble women, who in all ages have given of their life, labor and loVe, so that humanity should be blessed by their children. Back of every reform movement in the world's history can be traced the power of the hand who rocked the cradle of the person whose life was the center of that epochal movement We turn away from the study of Israel's history to study one of the most vivid and dramatic events in the record of Judah, during the pe- viod of the divided kingdom, that im- pressively illustrates the power of women in the affairs of men and na- tions., The lesson is a bloody one. The revolting picture is due to the presence of Athaliah, the strong will- ed, coarse selfish and imperious woman who introduced aal worship into Judah. In contrast with the in- fluence of this bad woman, we have in the power of a good woman illus- trated by Jehosheba, whose intiut ness, ingenuity and influence aved J h and moved Jeholada to place the youns lad upon the throne and purge Judah from idolatry Jehosaphat, when in the height of ik prosperity, was filled with the de- sire to unite both kingdo! under one ruler. There is no greater blessing one estow upon his children them the gracions influence of Christian exam- ple and training, such as Jehoiada and his wife gave to the prince, whom they saved from death In the battle for the restoration of the Davidic line and the overthrow of Baal, the central figure in the le: n s oiada, the patriotic and progres- rlest, who remained loyal t during the days when the snce of the ourt was imposing the worship of Baal upon Judah, In Israel the prophets were the leaders in the work of religious reformation. but in Judah, where the. temple wa: the center of its religious life, a priest takes the lead in the work of refor- mation and in planning for the revo- lution, that would place Joash upon the throne of his father. Jehoiada alized that political and social life can only be strong when pure reli- gion dominates the life of the people, not through a national church, but through lives of personal purity Lation. 4 among them Jehoiada was the man for the hour. - was a skilled strategist, the mas- sr of men and methods in Judah crucial hour. While training the ho. prince for the place that the purpose | and providence of Giod had provided for Joash to perpetuate the Davidic line, the priest planned for the over- throw of the usurping queen, Atha- liah, by a series of conferences, cove- nants and a ceremony of consecration of the young king at a psychological No government is secure that is not based upon the affections of the peo- wle. The people’s hatred against the rule of the foreigner had increased with the passing of the years. Every detail had been carefully considered. when the hour came to crown Joash and start the religious reformation to overthrow Baal. It was a bold plan to seek to do both at one time. Jehoiada revealed that he was an excellent executive by the care with which he planned to carry out his program. He selected a day of worship when the temple would be more crowded and better protected than the palace. He sum- moned and secretly placed within the temple walls the Levites from all parts of Palestine. He assigned to each a position of service, so that he had the temple, as well as the young king, protected by the united civil. military and religious forces. It was then that he presented the young prince before the people and revealed the purpose of Jehovah and called for their public acceptance of the young prince as their constitutional head. The cries of the people aroused the wicked queen to realize that her power was imperiled. She. tried to check the rising tide of revolution by her personal presence, but found that Jehoiada was -the master of the situation. It Is a gruesome record, yet no one can tell how much fur- ther the bloodshed was saved by her . The crowning of Joash w but a step in the plan of Jehoiada to cleanse the natlon from the perils of Baal. The greatest victory ever won in Judah for Jehovah was secured by the action of the loyal priest, who, public_covenant from the ging their loyalty to their d, when they agreed to be " The king also made one with Jehovah and the na- tion. The work of reformation was carried out rapidly until the nation was cleansed from every taint of 1 worship, Men have been seeking to solve the problems of the world aiong political and economic lines.
