Parent-Teacher Activities. -| (Thls ealumn is conducted under the auspices of the District of Columbia brancl Jatlonat” Congress of Bothers' aad Parents Teacher Associutions. Cnly a few weeks until schools will open thelr doors again. What shsll be the high-sounding mote of the Parent-Teacher Astoclations? Parents ure already discussing the needs of their children and wondering it the boy or girl will have the teacher best suited for him or her. Perhaps many a mother, like Mrs. Coolidge, thinks her boy needs much care and attention, The majority of our teachers in the District are women. What I8 keeps ing the men out of the profession— the low salar: Or do they l\\mk women are best suited for the w ? Tt h not beén many vears since Mis Susan B. Anthony, the irst woman to speak on the floor of a teachers’ con- vention, lielped to introduce a reso- Iution for recognition of the right af woman teachers to equal pay, which was arricd despit the president's protests, Miss Anthony taught sehool when seventeen years old, re- ceived §150 u week und “boarded round.” Has the vote for women changed conditions? The next gen- eration is more important than bat- tleships or forts. Unless we breed race able to hold off the Japanese on one side and all Europe on the other, no battleships or forts will save u: There has been a constunt incre in the proportion of married women engaged in gainful occupations in the District during the last thirty vears. The chil welfare committee of the Women Christian Temperance Union presented the school a pair of scales to use in welghing the children. We have had seven day mectings and two meetings for fathers and mothers who work. Dr. Murphy established @ nutri- tion clinic in the school in October. After the weighing and measuring, done by the mothers, had been finished twenty parents of children very much Dbelow normal were notified to send their cheildren, but only elghteen re- sponded. Our gift to the school from the elghth grade at graduation is yet to be bought,” The report from the West School follows: “Miss B. 1. Pattison, prin- clpal. iy particularly fortunate in its recent addition and improvement, making it one of the best equipped and most attractive schools in the District. The bullding s in excellent condition throughout, and especlally sanitary as to toilets, of which there are twenty-three for girls, the same number for boys and four for techers. Washbowls, paper towels and soap add to the comfort and cleanliness of the puplls, particularly those who re- main during the lunch hour. ~ The vasement is clean, airy and light, fure nishing the proper condition' for children’s use at recess when the weather Is too inclement for play oute side. The playgrounds are fitted with equipment purchased from funds rgalized from school luncheons and theater beneflts. Of these, $317.21 was made last session from a luncheon and $279.58 from a theater movie party. During the yeur $709.49 has been expended for playground equip- ment and plctures. These latter adorn the hall and, besides adding to the attractiveness of West School, are of such a character as to foster in the children an appreclation of the best {n literature and art. As a health asset, more than 400 bottles of milk with_ crackers are sold daily to the chlldren. Very few red cards are issued, and the average health record wus good. Thrift is demonstrated by the fact that more than $1,200 was deposited in the | sehool Lank, Tour schools in the build- ing havin v pupil a depositor. Piney Eranch Parent-Teacher As- soctation of West School numbers 500 members. It is a live organization, and its regular meetings, under the { prestdency of Mr. Jullhn, are fraught with interest and profit alike to teacher, parent and pupll. Miss 'Pattison, the vice president, presides as principal, over a corps of capable and efficient teachers and is herself an inspiration to the children er supervision of work and play. The one great need of this school, however, i€ an auditorium, the present ng inadequate for general as- ¥ purposes. One cannot be a true friend of the United States by shutting his eyes to the wrong attitude, being a consumer and not & producer. Our great need is a revival of the joy of work and a de- #ire to serve. Parents should be an example for their childrn.
