NEW YORK, December 24.—The sud- den death yesterday of James Rolland Morse, chalrman of the board of direc- tors of the American Trading Company and ne of the leading fizures in the for- eign tride of this country, was an- nounced today. He was in his uvmty- fourth year. He was one of the ploneer American traders in Japan. He went there in 1875 and remained for twenty-seven years. When he left to return to Amer- ica the emperor decorated him with the second order of the Sacred Treasury, one of the highest decorations’ ever awarded to a civilian. REAR ADMIRAL BARTON DIES FROM PARALYSIS Naval Officer Stricken Wednesday in Philadelphia—Was Sixty- Nine Years of Age. Word was received here today of the death in Philadelphia Friday of Rear Admiral John Kennedy Barton, United States Navy, retired. Admiral Barton was stricken with paralysis Wednesday night at the hospital to which he had been taken three weeks 4go from his home in the Hotel Nor- mandie. He was sixty-nine years old. Funeral services will be held Tuesday in Philadelphia, and interment will be in Westminster cemetery. Admiral Barton was hend of the Navy examining board during the Spanish-American war. In 1902 Presi- dent Roosevelt appointed him engi- neer-in-chief of the Navy, with the rank of rear admiral. He was at one time head of the engineering depart- ment of the !’h(ladelph(a navy yard. He retired in 1908. Born In Philadelphia April 7, 1852, Admiral Barton received his’ early education at the Philadelphia Cen- tral igh School, being graduated with onc of the highest averages in the history of that institution. At _efghteen he entered the Naval Academy, from which he’was gradu- ated with its first engineering. class. He married Miss Mildred Scott of Philadelphia, daughter of John H. Scott, shipbuilder, and sister of Hen- ry J. Scott, a well known lawyer of the same city. He was later sent to Annapolis as an instructor in engineering. s practical work of recent years was the establishment and fitting out of a steam engineering plant at the Naval Academy. He reached the rank of chief en- gineer in_ 1895, and served on the gunboat Bennington from 1895 to 1897. During the Spanish-American war he served on the receiving ship Richmopd at Norfolk. He was fleet engineer of the Asiatic fleet from April, 1901, to March, 1902. He was stationed at the Naval Academy from 1902 to 1907. He was made captain in 1907, being the youngest officer to liflld that rank in the Navy at the time. Admiral Barton was a member of the Army and Navy Club of this city and the Racquet, Union League and niversity clubs of Philadelphia. He is survived by one son, Dale S.
