In an effort to keep the skyline of the National Capital clear of dense columns of smoke Health Officer Fowler announced yesterday that he _|i8 considering detailing additional in- Spectors to enforce the anti-smoke aw. Since December 1 Dr. Fowler has had warrants issued for the managers of six buildings for alleged violation of the act of Congress which declares it a public nuisance to permit thick black or gray smoke to issue from a smokestack. . During Nevember the health depart- ment instituted preceedings against twenty-three alleged violators. The law prescribes a penalty of not less than $10 or more than $100 for this offense, and the health officer ex- pressed the belief recently that when repeated violations are discovered in the same building thé maximum fine should_be levied. According to health nearly all of the persons charged with violating the smoke law forfeit col- lateral instead of going to trial. Dr. Fowler also stated xesterday that buildings of the federal and Dis- 1 trict” governments are required to obey the smoke law.
