The accessory pictured above is a novel radiator-filling attachment which will be put on the market in the near future. This device, which fills a long-felt want, embodies many novel features, although it is very simply construct- ed. It operates ifi the following way: When the water in the radiator gets low the radiator becomes overheated and causes the string of sausages (K) to get dry, thereby shrinking up and pulling down lever (F), which tilts reservoir bucket (R) and refills radi- ator. The sausages then cool off and stretch out again, allowing the lever | 80 back to their original position un- til the engine becomes overheated again. MR. JASPER'S POME DEPT. This Week's Pome. The storekeeper you see In the picture above Tries fo make you believe He's In business for love. When he sells you a tire Or. a magneto file, ) He swears he’s lost money, Still he sells with a smile. But the man that you see In the picture below Mxkex a profit when he sells nd don’t mind telling you so. I think he's the fellow ‘Whose praise should be sung, For when he sells you a spark plug You don’t feel you've been stung. Answers to Last Week's 1. If the ammeter of an automo- bile electric system indicates ‘dis- charge” at high engine speed and “charge” at low speeds, the trouble generally lies in the battery termi- nals. The cable leading to the bat- tery and the one golng from battery are reversed, thus causing the am- meter to show a reading opposite to that it should indicate. 2. Proper placing of the spark control lever in regard to engine speed is important. If the spark is retarded at high engine speed the engine will not derive full power from each charge of fuel, will not respond as quickly to the accelerator and will cause carbon to collect in explosion chambers. If the spark is advanced at low engine speeds there is danger of snapping connecting rods, because there is not power and momentum enough at low speed to carry each piston over against the early explosion caused by advanced spark. At least there is more chance of the engine stalling when attempt is made to accelerate In this condi- tion, each piston trying to finish com- pression stroke against the pressure of explosions which are taking place too soon. The stronger of the oppo- site forces, either explosions or force of pistons going against explosions, wins. If the engine is revolving fast enough the pistons will overcome the power of the explosions for the re- maining short distance of compres- sion strokes. If the engine is run- ning very slow the explosions will be too powerful, forcing the pistons back down the cylinders and stopping the engine’s operation. It is at the point where both forces aresnearly equal that connecting rods break. 3. In the ' average three-speed automoblle - transmission there are clent gears, including the idler gear for reverse speed. Three gears are mounted on the main drive shaft] Questions. ) PHE - SUNDAY STAR, WAS i (F) and the reservoir bucket (R) to QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS FOR THE AUTOMOBILIS HOW_TO DRIVE AND CARE FOR YOUR AUTOMOBILE. Written by six automobile mechan- ics out of work. (Second Installment.) THE RADIATOR: Most Instruction books suggest keeping anti-freeze in the radiator during the winter. This 18n't necessary and the nly reason they suggest it is to help the anti- freeze people along. Hood covers are also detrimental as they tend to cause the paint on the radiator to crack and blister. There isn't very much danger of the radiator freezing up in the win- ter time without a hood cover or anti- freeze. (If it should happen to freeze up by any chance, we have a very good price on repairing radiators.) HOW TO GRIND THE VALVES ON YOUR CAR AT HOME: After remov- ing the head from the motor the valves are exposed to view. They can be released by removing the springs, ‘which are fitted into the side of the motor. After the valves are removed they are all ready to be ground. Take each valve separately and hold the edge or seat of it to the cutting sur- face of a good, coarse grindstone. As the grindstone cuts the pits out of the valve seat, revolve it slowly 80 as to get it bright and shiny all ‘around. After having ground all the valves replace them and then scrape off the }carbon on the cylinder head. Bolt | the cylinder head back in place and the car is then ready to run. (Should the motor not run just right when you get through we will be glad to do i 3 the job over again for you for only $165.) HINGTON, D. G, fuse did not blow the battery weuld discharge. A slight ground, usually caused by water or oil soaked wire insulation when the wire Is touching metal, such®as the car frame, may be unnoticed for a period as it may discharge the battery slowly. en it is first noticed it will b€ when an aftempt is made to crank the en- gine with the starting motor or when lights are switched on with engine silent or running slowly. Because of the discharged condition of the bat- tery the starter will be sluggish or may not respond at all, and the lights will be dim until the engine is accel- erated, when they will brighten as the generator begins to charge. 8.—A storage battery can deliver an amperage of twice or more its ca- pacity for a fraction of a second, providing it is in good condition. This overload may be as high as 450 amperes, the maximum required for cranking operations. When he came to, he explained to the doctor and a few friends at the hospital that he was driving alonz at a good clip, when he struck 4 bump and the Ford flew out of his hands. The steering wheel it seems broke oft and he was still holding onto it when he was picked up. The Ford was found this morning in the bushes about a half mile from the scene of the accident. Never retard the spark to slow down the speed of an engine. This practice causes carbon formation and pitting of valves, in addition to plac- ing more work on the engine and causing a waste of fuel. If you desire to slow the speed of the en- gine close the throttle, and as the engine speed dies, regulate the spark accordingly. If you wish to cut down the speed of a car when in motion, close the throttle, disconnect the e gine from the rear wheel by disen- gaging the clutch and apply the brakes. When desired speed is at- tained speed up engine slightly and cngage the clutch ‘slowly. Or you can close the engine throttle and allow the car to idle along to the spe wanted without speed war disengaging 5. The ‘ammeter of your electric system may register charge with the engine running even though the lights are burning. This is accounted for by the fact that at a fair rate of speed the generator sends more cur- rent into the battery than the lights are consuming. This may not always be the rule; the amount of current generated can be regulated somewhat within the generator by adjustment. 6.—Cylinders of an elght-cylinder “V” type engine are usually 90 . grees apart. On the “V" type twelve they are placed usually 60 degrees apart. 7.—The length of time a “ground” can remain in an electric aystem without being noticed depends upon how firmly the contart is made. The wire that is grounded may be In direct contact with the frame, having part of its insulation worn through, 80 that the wire is touching metal, This would correspond to a short circuit in a single wire system and would bring the result of crossing two unprotected wires—that of melt- ing the fuse of the circuit.
