Dr. Plotz made his world-famous typhus discoveries after the Huro- pean .war started and while he was an interne of Mount Sinai Hospital, New York. Despite new Treasury regulations al- lowing physiclans to issue an unlimited number of prescriptions for beer, they will be held to the old maximum of 100 prescriptions every three months, Com- missioner Haynes said yesterday. Regulations covering physicians' pre- scriptions, Mr. Haynes explained, limit them to 100 a quarter and will apply whether the doctors prescribe whisky, wine or beer, or some of all of these remedies. Mr. Haynes added that he saw no reason for changing the rule, A decrease of about $12,000,000 in taxes collected on non-beverage dis- tilled spirits during July, August and September as compared with the cor- responding months of last year was an- nounced yesterday by Mr. Haynes. During those months of this year revenues derived from this source amounted to $15,380,647, as compared with $27,106,911 during the same months last year. This reduction, Mr. Haynes explained, was caused by a falling off in the withdrawals of alco- hol and so-called non-beverage dis- tilled spirits from warehouses, there being a reduction of more than 8,000 withdrawal permits In September, as compared with-previous months. Five field agents of the prohibition unit have been killed in line of duty within the past few months and others e narrowly escaped death at the inds of lawbreakers. Prohibitlon Commissioner Haynes sald in a state- ment. These men daily face death, scorn and temptation, to do their duty, the commissioner said. The agent, Mr. Haynes continued, faces extreme risk in following those engaged in the il- licit liquor trafic. Only recently, he sald, two agents in New York oty refused an offer of $50,000 cash with a promise of double that amount to 0. K. withdrawal permits and arrest- ed the alleged bribe giver. Burch was found guilty today of “assault with intent to commit murder, in the first de- gree” as a result of the shooting here the night of July 16 of Mrs. A. W.
