One of the active and gracious hostesses in central California. dur- ing the past summer. was Miss Eu- dora Clover, daughter of the late Ad- who was Miss Dora Miller, daughter of an associate justice from this same state. Miss Clover has been identi- fled with Washington society since her tenderest years, when the fancy balls given by her parents for all the children of their friends became as well established as the New Year fete or the Christmas tree. She made her debut under brilllant auspices amd was undeniably a virile leader in her set. Her younger sister, Miss Beat- rice Clover, married just previous to the war Col. Thomas Holcomb, U. S. M. C., of Wilmington, Del, but Miss Prinde Charming. She threw herself heartily into war work, spent two winters in France translating and serving generally in a clerical capac- ity, and then she became loath to re- enter the butterfly world again. A year ago last autumn, she matricu- lated in the Agricultural College of Sonoma and in June took a certincate with high ratings. Since then she has taken over the extensive ranch just out of Cloverdale and has be- stowed untiring attention on blooded stock, the' raising of four annual crops of alfalfa to feed them, with several side interests, like strawberry beds and fine peaches. The Clover- dale ranch lies in the path to the eyser country and numerous friends glva been lured from their way thither to spend a few days at the big adobe house and enjoy the mar- velous dairy products to which Miss Eudore gives much attention. Mr. and Ms. Reginal Foster, the latter formeriy Miss Krances Hoar, tarried for some weeks in Vancouver and Victoria, possibly cooling after a long sojourn in Bermuda and sev- eral visits to rather warm Spots in the middle west. They sailed, how- ever, some time ago for the far east, preferably to pass the winter in China. Mrs. Foster is making a pro- found study into interpretative danc- ing, and naturally she will find much to engross her in the early home of dancing in Japan as well a8 in China. The larger Chinese cities have well established American colonies, that at Canton being especially gay and in- || teresting, with the young John Rocke- fellers likely to remain for monthg longer and with an_intellectual ce Eudora has seemingly never met her/ Countess Cora, widow of the soa; magnate, Colgate. Lady Byng, whg s as eagerly awaited as her husband, is without doubt one of the ablest writers of the day, and inherits, say her friends, all the keen, discriminat- ing judgment and poise which fell to her father, the late Sir Richard Charles Moreton of Suffolk. Sir Charles was' the seventh son of a seventh son, and tremendous things were predicted of him, which- were erhaps .prevented by his early death. dy Byng is the granddaughter of two distinguished peers, the Earl of Ducie and Lord Sherbourne. She be- gan to write when in her teens and had published a novel before she was twenty. Her best known books are Bnr.r'lern' and “Anne of the Marsh- land,” both said to be autobiographic. Washington is quite logically in- terested in the rumor that the venturs of Lady Marjorie Dalrymple in con- ducting a glove shop in New York has not proven the golden opportu- nity she believed, and that she is con- templating a tea shop, with odds and ends of curios and wearables as a side line, in this city. Lady Marjorie is a veritable “daughter of the gods,” divinely tall to the measurement of fully six feet, slender, and with ex- quisite grace.” She is the daughter of the late Earl of Stair and a sister of the present peer, and if this literary connection were not enough to lure patrons to her shop, it was her re- mote kinswoman who furnished the tragic plot of Sir Walter Scott’s tale, 'The Bride of Lammermoor.” This lady, a grandaunt many times re- moved of Lady Marjorie, was Lady Janet Dalrymple, whom a stern father compelled to wed the laird of Bal- doon, when her troth had been plight- ed to her lover, Edgar, Lord Ruther- ford. It all happened very much as Scott wrote it and like the libretto for which Verdi weaved his charming music. Lady Marjorie, if she con- ducts a genuine English tearoom, with hot scones and buttered toast and marmalade, varied by milk toast and creamed salt beef, will draw a large clientele,” for many have been the lamentations that no such was to be found in the capital. Mr. Tuck went to Paris some fifty-odd years ago as American consul, and from that post into the banking firm of John Munroe & Co. He was, on his retirement many years ago, senior member of the house. Fortunately both he and Mrs. Fletcher are well pre- pared in ways diplomatic and have enjoyed wide social experience. Then they can feel assured of the cordial co-operation of the residential set, to- gother with every aid which a large staft of experts in the State Depart- ment can render. Washington has become quite familiar with the rou- tine to be. observed when such dig- nitaries as those expected in Novem- ber honor the city with their pres-} ence. Fortunately no royalty has yet been announced, though there may be a prince sent by the clamoring lesser Balkan states and from Japan and China. There are many here who re- call the harrowing days when Prince Henry came to christen the kaiser's yacht and the feverish review of eti- quette prescribed by the defunct house of Hohenzollern. Mr. Fletcher however, has wisely decided to follow the example of Mr. Lansing 'when right royal, royal and serene high- nesses descend on Washington like an avalanche—dictate a dignified order of procedure and let all visitors abide Misses.
