TInspectors of the health department ‘Wil apply to the Police Court tomor- Tow for warrants for a number of property owners who, they charge, have failed to comply with the order| to cut weeds from vacant lots. The police several weeks ago listed all of the vacant lots in the densely Populated sections of the city on ‘which high weeds have been permitted to grow. This list was turned over to Health Officer Fowler for action. The health officer detailed his sani- tary inspectors to find the owners otl the lots on the list and serve the re- qQuired sgven-day notice on them.to cut the weeds.. Nearly all of the per- sons upon whom notice was served bave complied with the order. Clifford.Lanham, superintendent of trees ard parkings, reported to Com- missioner” Oyster yesterday that his men are making satisfactory progress in cutting -weeds ‘on public parking | space. The cutting of weeds is one of the steps being taken by the Commis- sioners to “shine up” the city for the conference on the limitation of arma- ments. COMMUNITY CENTER TAKES OVER BOYS’ CLUB Achievement Association, Started by Rotary Club, to Be Run by Community Secretaries. The first American Boys® Achfeve- ment Club of Washington, established by the local Rotary Club, has been | “taken over by the community center department of the District public schools and will be operated by the| community secretaries, it was an-; nounced last night by Miss Cecil .B. Norton, general community secretary. Judge Willis Brown, who organized the first boys’ achievement club in the United States, will assist the com- | }i~ munity center heads in firmly es- tablishing the clubs, in the various| centers throughout the city. i The Boys' Achievement Club of Washington- was formally organized by the Rotary Club in June, follow-) ing the distribution of 7,000 ques-, tionnaires to the boys in the eighth| grades of the public schools. The questionnaires were designed to show how many youths had actually achieved something. In taking over the operation of the club the community center department ' will ascertain how boys in the graded gchools occupy thelr leisure time. hen it is proposed to organize indi- | vidual units in the various centers, where the boys will be given instruc- tions in the achievements in which they are intensely interested. “Useful occupation for idle mo- ments,” is the slogan of the club. Pennsylvania Road " Announces Plan Backed by Employes. Employes long associated with the Pennsylvania railroad are conducting a campaign:to organize veteran em- ployes’ associations on all divisions ‘which have not already organized and to increase the membership of those already in existence, according to an announcement by the railroad. As soon as the divisional organizations are perfected it is planned to hold a Pennsylvania system convention to be attended by the officers and delegates of the various associations. Reports received from the four re- gional vice presidents indicate that approximately 38,778 employes are eli- gible for membership in the veterans' | association by virtue of twenty or; more years of service with the Penn- sylvania railroad. Of the 190,000 em- ployes on the pay roll at present ap- proximately 20 per cent have served the railroad and the public at least a score of years. One employe in five is classed'as a veteran.
