Barrie's little er, was quite equal to the ASHINGTON paid its tribute of ad during the week, even though he on the vaudeville size of playlet. classic, “The Twelve Pound Look,” howev demands upon it, for it served to reveal Miss Barrymore’s exquisite artistry and thus made the champions of “the greatest American actress,” as they are pleased go call her, happy. Whether Miss Barrymore is the greatest American actress is a question that opens the door to argument, and the weather is too warm for that; but there can be no possible doubt of the fact that she is an actress for whom the Amer- ers of the drama have the warmest admiration and sympathy. * %k ¥ X THE wonderful growth of little theater movements in this country may all, to the future of the American stage. The|- summer months have been taken up largely with the discussion of hard times, their causes and the way out. So experienced a connoisseur as George Arliss has predicted that the local stock company will be the solution to the difficulties. The high cost of transportation seems inevitable in the present state of national affairs, and there is but little question that it saps the big profits which the commercial man- agers have been used to receive. There are many not of the strictly professional stage who believe they should have their chance to appear and unfold their genius. There are many professional players who feel confident they deserve the right to appear on Broadway, which, after the methods of the New York managers, has been made to appear as the open sesame to fame and financial success. The stage does not at pres- ent revel in a wealth of great stars, however thickly studded the the- atrical firmament may appear. The local stock company, with com- petition in the excellence of production among the managers who are given the privilege of presenthig “a star,” seems a plausible solution of the problem, especially as it is contended by even our great actors that great stars grow out of stock companies. With, say, a dozen such companies in our leading cities, why, too, may not the members in each hope to climb out of “the provinces” into the “metropolis” by sheer force of their ability, thus replacing lesser genius which may, for a time, be first permitted to shine on Broadway? Such a condition would tend to a rivalr yin theatric art which could not but be beneficial to the American stage. Who knows, it might even work an improvement in the American producer? ican lov: point the .way, after * X X X AVER\' HOPWOOD'S latest play, as yet unnamed for the public, which is to be produced by A. H. Woods, it is said, is concerned with the life of the motion picture studio, while Zoe Atkin's play, “The Lady in Waiting.” now called “Greatness,” is a study of the artistic temperament. * X X ¥ ¥ JOSEPH SCHILDKRAUT, who, despite his name, has been hailed a an actor of advanced talents and ability and who has been seen in Washington, has been clamped with a long-time and profitable con- tract by David Wark Griffith and will henceforth “make movies.” * % %k X A RNEST TRUEX is said to have found “his play” and his great op- portunity in William Anthony Maguire’s comedy, “Six-cylinder, Love,” the story of what happens when you try to stretch a two-cylinder income to meet $WE vequivements of “a”twin-six automobile. - It: was produced recently in Atlantic City by Sam H.
