Nationals Tame Tygers in Sensational Contest, 4-3 : Washington Canoe Club Wins Regaita ~O’'ROURKE STAR IN GAME| Some of Canoeists Who Helped Repel Invading Teams |PADDLING MARK IS SET REPLETE WITH THRILLS : ' IN SENIOR FOUR EVENT Clouts Homer to Give Griffs Early Lead, Crew of Host Club, Which Scores 74 Points, to Produces Decisive Punch in Garrison Finish Dominate Affair, Covers Half Mile in and Fields in Spectacular Style. 3 Minutes, 32 4-5 Seconds. BY JOHN B. KELLER. BY DENMAN THOMPSON. 'WASHINGTON CANOE CLUB paddlers, competing in their own LL advance notices about the caliber of the “battle for third place” regatta yesterday on the Potomac course immediately above the Aqueduct bridge, not only swamped entrants from the Colonial Canoe Club of this city and the Philadelphia and Red Dragon Canoe Clubs of Philadelphia, but established a record for the feature event of the program. In the double-blade senior fours Harry Knight, |Karl Knight, Lex Martin and Percy Walton, sporting the Red and Blue of the host organization, swept to victory over the half-mile course in 3 | minutes. 32 4-5 seconds, 2 1-5 seconds better than the best previous i time established for a similar race by the Philadelphia Canoe Club crew 1t Philadelphia on August 23, 1919. were more than borne out in the initial clash between Griffmen and Tygers yesterday when a crowd of more than 10,000 saw the local entourage cop, 4—3, through a spectacular Garrison finish. X Marked by bickering incidental to a claim advanced that the visi- tors batted out of order at a critical junctureé and the jockeying of players incidental to the employment of managerial strategy the con- test provided all the thrills of both a’ mound duel and a slugging match and became so tense that at the finish one fair fan collapsed from the strain and was removed to her home in an unconscious condition. For seven innings the affair proved a contest of pitching prowess between Walter Perry Johnson and Hubert Deutsch Leonard, with the orthodox propeller possessed of an edge over his fork-handed opponent due largely to a clout for the circuit by Frank O'Rourke following a single by Shanks, with some very snappy fielding by Milan and O'Rourke . @s an additional important consideration. . ~/ _All told, the Washington Canoe | Club_ registered seventy-four points lin the eleven events contested for H |the regatta trophy.
