In Social an SOCIETY ‘Tales of Well Known Folk d Official Life New York Matrons Have Already Arranged| Winter Schedules—Early Visit Here Ex- pected From Gen. and Lady Byng. While the capital is breathing easily, now that the season proper is aver and nothing but the most In- formal affairs are in order, prominent New York matrons have already ar- ranged their winter schedule and every bud and bride of consequence has been tabbed off for a specific date. Coming-out parties, dinners and dances for bridal attendants and dates for the junior assemblies and for the midyear balls are solemnly made public. The schedule extends from November 18, when the two daughters of Mrs. rton Goddard will bow, until April 22, when the last of the four midyear cotillions will be given, and any bud or bride who takes a second though will wreak utter confusion for the sSocial super- structure. More than fifty debu- tantes have been listed, while the couples who will go to the altar are less than half that number. But the social set of cities where prepared- ness is less the watchword can ad- mire the optimism which the matrons of Gotham announce before the sum- mer has quite begun that more than twenty balls will be given with twice that number of lesser affairs and all before Christmas. Washington hos- tesses naturally ask where will they get the men, but the list of dates does not answer that question. Mrs. Seth Barton French, well known here for princely hospitality to prominent Washingtonians at Hot Springs, Va.. is a power at the court of their Rumanian majesties and is chosen confidante of the beautiful Queen Marie. Which recalls that the mo€her of Mrs. French, Mrs. Mary Walker Fearn, was a prime favorite in Bucharest in her day. Mrs. French only son of Sir Richard C. Moreton, and Is a cousin of the talented sculp- tress, Mrs. Clare Sheridan, who is the daughter of Honorable Moreton Frewen. The family seat, Thorpe Hall in Essex, has been occupied by Gen. and Lady Byng for some years and it was here that Lady Byng established the invalid home for soldiers and permitted their wives and children to join them during convalescence, an innovation praised by Queen Mary and cordially rec- ommended. The original, which is in the Capitol Square of Richmond, was greatly admired by the Prince of Wales, hence the selec- tion of this statue rather than the several other equestrian flgures of the great patriot which are scattered over the country. The Governor of Virginia has sent a special delega- tion to represent the old common- wealth and the members, Mrs. Henry Louis Smith, Mrs. Ric L. Brewer and Mrs. John W. Williams, sailed with the mammoth offering on the Lapland on June 11. These ladies, who were instrumental in making the campaign for this gift successful, will be the guests of the British gov- merous American relatives and may follow the example of her mother and make them an occasional visit.
