CITY AND DISTRICT. IT WAS A MODEL EXCURSION, ‘The Fire Underwriters and Their Guests Enjoy a Shad Bake. Tt was a merry party that went down to Marshall Hall on the Macalester yesterday afternoon to enjoy the annual shad bake of the Association of Fire Underwriters of the Dis- trict of Columbia. It was 3 o'clock when the boat left her wharf and upon landing at Mar- shail Hall shortly after 4 o'clock the excur- sionists scattered over the beautiful grounds, enjoying themselves in various ways until sum- moned to attend the feast. It was a regular fish dinner, composed mainly of clam chowder and planked shad. Those who knew all about Planked shad said they had never tasted better, and those who didn’t vowed they would never miss an opportunity to renew their acquaint- ce with what seemed to them a new Kind of fish. After everybody had done fu'l justice to the menu Captain Tyler, as master of ceremonies, inaugurated a little impromptu speech making and responses ere made by Commissioner Douglas, Mr. Geo. C. Hazelton, Mr. Tenney of Philadelphia, Mr. Theodore W. Noyes of Tax Stax. Mr. Si- mon Wolf and Mr. Edward Droop. marks were, of course, in a g humorous vein, and the fire insurance bovs came in for a good many pleasant allusions to their proverbial glibness of tongue, persuasive owersand shrewdness. The hour of d Fgne which remained was spent in bowling, shooting. hotographing and strolling about. The Macalester started on her home- | ward trip at 7:30 and reached her Wash- ington wharf at 8:45. The homeward trip was particularly enjoyable. ‘The weather was rfect and the choice spirits, of which Mr. ‘oop was the central figure, gathered on the forward deck, kept everybody in a good humor with speech making, songs and jokes. The ex- cursion was voted as the most succevsful the underwriters have given and that is suying » great deal. Among the members and guests present were Commission :r Douglass, Geo. C. Hazelton, A. A. The down-slidden Senators lost their fourth straight game to Baltimore yesterday after a hot contest by the score of 9 to8. Eleven innings were required to decide the battle, each side scoring in the eleventh. Bultimore, however, made two runs, while the Statesmen could secure but one. The Nationals played rather poorly at first and allowed the enemy to get a good lead, while they were not hitting the ball. Then in the seventh they began to pound, and by scoring five times tied the score, knocking Madden out of the box. The batteries were Bakely and McGuire, and Madden, McMahon, ‘Townsend and Robinson. There were about 700 people present at the game, which lasted two hours and twenty-five minutes. HOW IT WAR. ‘The Sun saysof the contest: For sixinnings the Baltimores maintained a lead in the num- ber of runs scored without exerting them- selves, as if Washington was sure to be beaten anyhow. Madden created a little temporary interest by doing nicely in the box and striking ‘out some one or retiring the opposing side just at the right time. Then in the seventh inning the surprise came. First MeQueery placed a hit in center field, where it tingled Welch's hands. Nobody felt alarmed. McGuire went out on a tame pop fly to Wise. Bakely smacked the ball to left field safely and the ru 2 began to tally. Matters grew interestin ily the batting kept up until Dowd drov nk ing single over Gilbert's head tnd tied the score. Madden, having been tampered with for nine hits, was wisely removed from the | front of battle. and McMahon and Robinson tock the points for Baltimore. The eighth and ninth innings sped by without » run on either side to change the score, and the tenth opened With Gilbert at the bet for Baltimore. Every motion of the players on both sides ‘was now narrowly watched, and the cries and cheers were incessant. Gilbert was hit on the shoulder by a pitched ball from the hand of Bakely, who had been vigilant and reliable in the box for Washington. Robinson tapped @ grounder to first base and Gilbert's chances of coming in with a run were destroyed before he reached second. Two more men were put out in short order and Washington took the bat. Dowd made hit and Smalley got » base on balls, but « splendid double play by Gilbert, who stopped a grounder and touched third base, and Werden, who caught his swift, true throw at first before the runner coull get down, disposed of the opposing team without trouble. All the mse was swept away in the eleventh inning. Welch, bent on winning the game, deliberately allowed himself to be struck on the head with a vicious inshoot that he might reach first base. Van Haltren pushed a single out on the ground toright field, Kay sacrificed with a bunt to Dowd and his two comrades moved up a base each. Wise settled the day. His single, which skimmed over the ground to the right of second base and just out of Dowd’s reach, brought in both runners amid ageneral tumult. The Washingtons got one run in their turn through Gilbert's misfortune in judging a fly ball poorly and « hit by Burns, ‘but that was ail. Itimore hai won. OTHER GAMES YESTERDAY. At the meeting yesterday of the Associa tion of Medical Superintendents of Amer- ican Institutions for the Insane Dr. Sted- man suggested that in view of the great good that bad been accomplished in be- half of the insane by Miss Dix, through whose } labors St. Elizabeth Hospital was founded, it would be aseemly thing for the association to establish a fund of $1,000, and to offer every second year a prize of $100, open toall the medical profession, for the best paper on some subject connected with the care and treatment of the insane, the prize to be known as the “Dix memorial prize.” The suggestion, which was put in the form of # resolution, was re- ferred to the general committee of thirteen provided for in Dr. Stearns’ motion. | Dr. Walter Channing, who has made a spec- ialty of craniometry and templeometry, read a valuable paper on the subject “Cranial Meas- | urements of the Insane.” He spoke of the de- | sirability of a uniform system of measurement of the headsand sku!lsof the insane. by means of his set of instruments, charts and three e1 | larged drawings of as many views of the skull Dr. Channing was able toexplain atsome length and in rather a technical way what might be accomplished in the matter of measurements. Tuning forks | of the pr . thrown into intensely rapid vibrations by electro-magnets were made to trace out their peculiar curves on smoked glass plates, thus showing at a glance the relative rapidity of their vibrations. To every fork there belo1 not only # particular musical note, but also a particular mathematical curve. By means of the Wave syren, a circulur brass plate, whose edge was scalloped out into a certain geometric curve, was made to produce the note corre- sponding to that curve, and by combining sev- eral simple curves into a single more intricate one the syren produced the same sound as the combined notes of the forks corresponding to the component curves. With Konig’s manometric fame and revolv- ing mirror serrated bands of flame were pro- duced, each band corresponding to its own particular note.
