Elevation of the Eminent Boston Clergyman by the Diocesan Convention, The convention of the Episcopal chureh in the diocese of Massachusetts yesterday in Boston elected Rev. Phillips Brooks of Trinity Church, Boston, to the office of bishop, to succeed the late Bishop Paddock. ‘The new bishop was born in Boston in 1895. He graduated at the Virginia Theological Semi- nary. He was early reco asa brilliant writer and eloquent preacher, and he is today considered the most popular divine in the American church. In 1869 he the rectorship of the Church of the Holy Trinity in Philadelphia and accepted a call to Trinity erm erage spoken of in . nently been of connection with the episcopacy, but he never ve any encouragement in this direction. The members of the Association of Medical Superintendents of American Institutions for the Insane,which has been in session at the Ar- lington since Tuesday, are today unanimous in their praise of St. Elizabeth's Asylum. They visited that institution in a body yesterday at the invitation of Dr. Godding and as a result they have nothing but words of commendation for its arrangement, equipment and manage- ment. After the adjournment of the morning session yesterday lunch was taken at the hotel and then the party found three big six-horse omnibuses ready to take them across the river. Little time was spent in filling them with loads of emi. nent physicians and then the start was made with br. Godding. in ‘the lead, having with him in his carriage Dr. Stearns, the retiring resident of the association. The line of march fea past the White House, army and navy build- ings, up the mall, and ‘through the Capitol grounds to the Navy Yard bridge, across to An- acostia, up Nichols avenue to the asylum. At the hospital a photograph of the group was taken, after which the visitors were taken ona tour of investigation around the buildings and grounds by Dr. Godding and the members of his staff—Dr. A. H. Witmer, Dr. Stack. Dr. A. C. Patterson, Dr. Simpson, Dr. Blackburn and Dr. Latimer. The visitors were pleasantly entertained at a luncheon of sandwiches, salads, ices and lemon- ade. After a couple of hours spent in a thor- ough study of the methods and arrangements of the institution the party started on the re- turn trip to the city, enthusiastic in praise of the hospitality and the painstaking efforts to make their visit pleasant and profitable by Dr. Godding and his assistants, and of the admira- ble conduct of the institution.
