Mr. and Mrs, Duustor made a visit to Col. and Mrs. de Arnaud at Carlton Hill, N.J., before the latter closed their place and came to this city. The newsboys of the city who are sharp enough to see the advantage of learning a trade in addition to their regular business of seling papers can, under the arrangements that have recently been made, receive a great deal of assistanco from the Newsboys’ Home in their laudable efforts. Two men have been em- ployed to teach the boys, one in tailoring and the other in shoemaking, while Mr. Sweeny, the superintendent of the home, stands ready to give instruction in carpentering. An invitation has been issued to all the boys who desire to enter any of these classes to be at the home this evening at 7 o'clock, so that they may be enrolled and the final arrangements completed for beginning the work, Classes will probably be held three evenings in the week and algo in the day time if enough boys can be got together between the hours of selling the morning and afternoon Le poe The regular nightschool at the home wil begin its sessions for the winter some time next month. This morning in the Criminal Court, Chief Justice Bingham, the sentence of one year and one day inthe Albany penittntiary passed on Henry H. Tucker, alias Wm. 8, Scott, June 18 last, was suspended during good behavior, and the defendant was released on his personal bonds, He was convicted May 12 of obtaining mouey and rings from Miss Helana Audenreid by fase representations, engaging her a8 an opera singer. Wm. Harris, alias Johnson, colored, who plead guilty Saturday of robbing $1.75 from Catherine E. McGrath on July 25, was called up for sentence, Assistant District Attorney Clagett stated that this class of cases was be- coming too common and while there was no record of the prisoner, he had been consorting with thieves. McDaniel, who died hero in 1887, asking that letters of admin- istration on his estate be issued to Thomas B. Stahl, The petition is made by Edward, Charles and Thomas §. McDaniel of New Jor- sey, who claim to be the brothers and only heirs, and state that a woman who lived with deceased and bore his name took possession of his estate and now hives at 630 M street north- west, but they assert that she is not the widow and was never married to him, and they claim to be entitled to the estate and ask a citation to the widow, es Charles Dowden’s Mental Condition. Atthe “Swampoodle” branch of the Police Court this morning a bookbinder named Chas. Dowden was arrained on a charge of threaten- ing his wife. Mrs. Dowden and her two young daughters appeared with tears in their eyes and told Judge Miller the story of their do- mestic unhappiness. They said that whisky was not the cause, but they did not think the mind of Dowden was altogether right. They told of his queer actions lately, “One day,” said one of his daughters, “papa would hide himself and ery. He imagined that somebody was after him to take his jifo.” Mrs. Dowden said she had been married twenty-six years, and she wanted something done for her own protection, but she did not want her husband sent to jail. Judge Miller thought that upon the showing of the man himself he should be examined by physicians as to his insanity, and for that pur- pose the case was continued ——__— District Supreme Court in Session. ‘The Supreme Court of the District convened its October term at 11 o'clock today—Chief Justice Bingham, Justices Hagner, James, Cox and Bradley present.
