INDIAN GRAMMAZ ‘Teache:—in the Indian school at Hazapton: “What is the mascaline of Hawk?” Small Indian: “Tomahawk, mum.” It is said the anti-Tilimanites in South Caro- Aina will “conduct a still campaign.” Let us hope it may not be an “illicit still.” ,. Real estate becomes ideal estate when the ‘boom strikes it in the right place, There's a wide difference between a self Meade man and s summer maid man, Mr. George Pullman of Chicago says he docs Bot believe in rich men buying seats in the United States Senate. Of course he doesn't. ‘What George believes in is their buying seats in a Pullman Parlor Car exclusively. Georgo is monopolist himself. HOUSE PAINTERS AND HOUSE PAINTERS. “Who are you?” pid the lieutenant of police to a hard-looking citizen whom an officer had ust brought in very, very fuil. “I~i—sb housh painter,” he gurgled, as he took a brush out of his belt. “Ob, I beg your pardon,” said the lieuten- ent “I didn’t know you wore a member of Congress. Where the road from Fairfax Seminary comes ‘up over the Virginia hills at Mt Zion Baptist Church, the traveler is brought face to face with Washington, lying spread out upon the father bank of the Potomac like a great picture on whien the light is thrown unexpectedly. It is a favorite pastime with those who know this road, to come suddenly from the quiet country valley to the top of the hill, and ina moment bring this beautiful view to the eyes of the stranger. The other Sunday s young man of this town was driving with his best girl slong that road, and woman-like she had about as much idea of where Washington was as a bird has of the location of the House restaurant in adry spell. Just before reaching the sum- mit, where he was going to spring the pano- rama on his unsuspecting victim, he said to her: ow, shut your eyes, and when I tell you to open them, open them.” * She agreed, and just as he reached the point of view he stopped his cart and said: “There, sweetheart; open your eyes; that's Washington,” and he bent over and kissed her, lingeringly asthe evening shadows touch the pink lips of the roses. “Ob, George,” she murmured in a bewilder- ment of rapture; “is it, really? I thought it was Paradise.” And George fell out of the cart, The New York World of yesterday contains an article “The Pets of Washington,” and not a word in it about either army or navy officers. Program of the Convention to Be Held Here Tomorrow. Ithas been said thatthe convention of the National Union of Catholic Young Men's So- cieties that begins in this city tomorrow morn- ing will be second in importance in its influ- ence on the church only to the Catholic con- gress held in Baltimore last year. At any rate it is certain that it will be the most important and largely attended convention that the union has ever held. It is probable that there wiil be between 400 and 500 delegates in attendance, New York alone sending 110. The union is composed mainly of Catholic litcrary and social societies, although all other societies within the church— religious sodaliti tet ce ieties and others have boon cordially weloomred te mem: bership. “There will be a number of mportant subjects brought before the convention for action, prominent smong them being the ques- tion of establishing reading circles, ‘This plan has many earnest supporters and will receive considerable attention at the handsof the union, DELEGATES COMING TONIGHT. ‘The delegates are expected to arrive for the most part this evening, and the committee of arrangements and reception appointed from Carroll Institute hzve made elaborate prepar- ations for their reception. The officers of this committee are: D. J. Murphy, prosident of the Carroll Institute; H. W. Sohon, chairman; N. T. Taylor, secretary, and N. H. Shea, troas- urer. Father Michael f. Laveile, rector of the New York Cathedral and president of the union, left New York for this city this morning, to- gether with the rest of the Now York delegates, They will be received at the station and escorted to their hotels and everything possi- ble done for their comfort. Every prominent parish in New York is represented. Many other sections of the country will be equally represented, though their delegations may not be quite so large. PROGRAM OF THE CONVENTION. Tomorrow the real work of the convention will begin, lasting probably through Thursday. At 8:30 tomorrow morning the delegates and visitors are to meet at the Arlington, which } will be the headquarters of the union during the convention. ‘They will then proceed in a body to St. Patrick's Church, where high mass will be celebrated by Rev. J. A. Walter, and Right Rev. J. J. Keane, D.D., rector of the Catholic University, will preach a sermon. Directly after the mass, at which Cardinal Gibbons is to be present, the delegates will roceed to Carroll Hall, on G street between and 10th streets, There the convention will be formally opened by Father Lavelle. Mr. D. L Murphy will welcome the delegates and visitors on behalf of the Carroll Institute and Commissioner Douglass for the people of the city generally. At 8 p.m. an informal reception 1s to be held at Carroll Hall. The sessions Wednesday will commence at 10 a.m. at Carroll Hall and in the evening at 8 o'clock a grand reception is to be given the delegates aud visitors at the Arling- ton. Thursday afternoon an excursion to Mount Vernou will be tendered to the visitors, the Charles Macalester leaving the 7th street wharf at 2 o'cioc! Casn Oz Cnzpiz.
