The most inter- esting feature of the decision, perhaps, 1s that which gives a city the right to regulate the use of its highways by a telegraph company. This right, which tho court maintained, applies, among other things, to the designation of par- ticular streets on which the wires may be ex- feuded or to the exclusion of such wires from particular streets. If this be good law in Michigan and for the city of Grand Rapids it ought to be good law in Washington and the District of Columbia. In Grand Rapids the telegraph company re- sisted the city’s demand to remove the wires and secured an injunction, but this was dis- Solved and the wires were at last taken down, SS This is German Day. On the 6th of October, 1633, Pastorius and his first company of land- owning sottlers in America landed at Phila- delphia, and soon thereafter established the colony at Germantown, Pennsylvania. Before that there had been scattering settlements, and st least one other important colony—that at Charleston, South Carolina. In 1674 about sixty families went to the latter place, but they merely made leases and did not settle in the permanent sense of the more northern colony.
