sd GRAGE AND ECONOMY CHARACTERISTICS OF ARFLOW CHRYSLER Built on Principle of Bullet; Great Saver of. Gasoline and Oil Increased smoothness in perform- ance, 40 per cent more car mileage cn a given. number of engine revolu- tions, greatly augmented speed, & saving in gasoline runhing from 11 to 18 percent and @ reduction un- cer certain conditions of as much as 50 per cent in oil consumption are made possible by an overdrive device used in the Airflow Chryslers, ac- cording to J. W. Prazer, general sales manager of the Chrysler Sales Cor- Poration. The new Airflow Chryslers will be exhibited at the Bismarck automo- bile and style show here next week- end by Corwin-Churchill Motors, Inc. “The results attained by this over- rive are almost unbelievable,” said Frazier. “Basically, it cuts down en- eugine revolutions about 30 per cent end this obvieusly means a great sav- ing in fuel, oil and wear. Compre- hensive tests by our engineering de- partment have sHown that gasoline consumption is on an aver- age of 15 per cent. It is harder to etrike an average for oil saving, be- cause oil consumption in any type of gasoline engine increases Tapidly | as speed mounts, virtually doubli for each 10 miles a above 50, “Economy, however, is only one of the things achieved. The over- drive makes possible the quietest and smoothest cperation ever attained in & motor car. At 75 miles an hour, One is not even conscious that the It is more as if engine is running. One of the most startling developments in automobiles fer 1934 is the design of the new Chryslers, and their kin, De Sotos. It represents the height of streai flaring of the headlights within the front of th od. felation to the wheels, so that all passengers a: Th ning, even to rounding of the radiator and ntire body actually is moved sorward in jeated between the axles, for greater riding comfort. , = the car were being towed with the clutch disengaged. With the over- drive, it is possible to do better than 75_miles an hour in second speed in our Imperial, and to do it so quietly that the driver doesn’t know wheth- er he is in second or high. What this means in acceleration is almost incredible. One can “jump” another car so fast that even one going 60 miles an heur seems to be standing still, Serves Dual Purpose “The overdrive serves either to at- tain a desired speed with 30 per cent fewer engine revolutions than in con- ventional drive, or greatly to increase the speed possible with maximum en- ;gine horsepower. Our Imperial will do 100 miles an hour with the over- |drive—a speed that hardly anyone jever would use but an indication of the tremendous reserve of power avail- |able for ordinary operation. “The tremendous importance of this unit may be appreciated by the|carry it 1,000 miles in conventional fcllowing brief engineering data: At| drive. 70 miles an hour in conventional “The overdrive unit embodies a ser- drive it requires 45 horsepower mere-|ies of helically-cut internal gears and ly to turn the engine over—or as the. it is incorporated with the free wheel- engineers term it to overcome engine) ing unit to form one compact assemb- friction. Engine of the driving loads over large num- friction obviously means power wast-|ber of gear contacts so that each gear ed and wear, so this saving is trans- lated into terms of longer life as well as fuel and oil economy. “At 70 miles an hour, the loads on. Pistons, pins and road bearings are reduced 63 per cent by the use of the overdrive, another factor in long life. Oil consumption at speeds of 50 miles and upwards is only one- half to one-quarter with: the over- cg what it is in conventional driv- ing. “At any sped from 40 miles up, the overdrive permits a car to travel 1,400 miles on the same number of engine, revolutions that would be required to M. In other words, the instant the car is going 40 miles an hour, the application of a given amount of power to the rear axle is attained with 30 per cent fewer engine revolutions than in conven- tional drive, together with astounding sinoothness.” The overdrive unit is standard ecuipment on the Airflow Imperial and Airflow Custom Imperial and is optional at a slight extra cost on the Airflow Eight. * Ballistics Aided Airflow Chrysler engineers went to many sources to get the data for the Air- flow design. Among these sources was the ballistic expert, who had achieved the boat-tailed bullet, which ig the ordnance version of stream- lining. A well-known ballistic engineer makes the following interesting com- ments on the discovery of the stream- lined, or boat-tail bullet and the comparison of wind action upon it and upon @ motor car: “During the late war, our troops were using a cartridge loaded with 150 er. flat base bullet. This bullet was not efficient for machine gun pur- poses where long range firing is per- formed. As a result of the experi- ence, there was developed a boat-tail bullet of @ stream-lined contour. “This bullet is propelled through muzzle of barrel at a velocity of about 2,700 feet per second. At this high velocity, there is a tremendous drag on the base of bullet and the drag from a stream-lined or boat-tail bul- let is approximately the same as that of a flat base type. The bullet is re- tarded in its flight by air, resistance and when the velocity is to approximately the velocity of sound, the merits of the boat-tail or stream- lined projectile are encountered. At this reduced velocity, the drag on the square base bullet still is maintained but with the boat-tail bullet, the drag is based very materially by the stream- lining. “An automobile lends itself remark- ably to the stream-lined design. Where the bullet referred to above is propelled from the gun at a veloc- ity of 2,700 feet per second, an auto- mobile even while traveling at 100 miles per hour has & velocity of only 146.7 feet per second. At the rela- tively low velocities of the motor car therefore, a stream-lining contour very materially reduces the drag.” New Rules for Annual Auto Race Introduced Washington, D.
