B, Gilman company, local dealers, In all more toom and greater length are provided and, at the same time, the cars are four inches lower than heretofore. Although the engines are funda- mentally unchanged, the bore of the eight has been increased % inch, and both the bore 3% by 4%, the piston y 4%, the pi displacement is 211.5 ana the horsepower rating is 67 at 3200 revolutions per minute. The eight has @ bore and stroke of 3 by 4% inches, a piston displacement of 240.33 cubic inches and is rated at 8 horsepower at 3200. ‘The increase in piston displacement for the six is more than 11 per cent and nearly 16 per cent for the eight. The eighi is equipped with an intake silencer and a copper-mesh air clean- er, the two bel contained in-a single housing mounted above the downdraft carburetor. Both cars are fitted with a new double-drop frame of exceptional stiffness, an advantage obtained by novel construction, The 7-inch side rails are reinforced by two additional side rails which run -back-from the front to @ sturdy cross member for- ward of the rear wheels. The intro- duction of these extra rails obviously adds much to the stiffness. Also the two rear cross members are tied to- gether by @ third pressed stee] mem- ‘ber to provide much greater stiffness at this point. Because of the double-drop frame in connection with Dodge monopiece all steel body construction, the new cars are exceptionally low. Their over-all height is 4 inches less than last year, and yet headroom has not been sacrificed. This marked reduc- tion in height plus an increase of 4 inches in wheelbase has greatly im- proved the apearence. Both the six and the eight are impressively large, considering the moderate price. The wheelbase of the éight is now 118 inches and the six has a wheelbase of 114 inches. Radiatar and hood conor a more pleasing and body lines have been improved. The sun-visor design is new. The windshield has a chrome- plated frame, is set at an angle, and opens outward. There are two venti- Jators in the top of the cowl, A dis- tinctive double-bar bumper has been adopted. Interiors are attractively finished. There are six optional upholstery combinations, one for the eight, five selections of upholstery on the six and twenty cglor combinations on both. Both have adjustable front seats. The eight-cylinder sedans have rear arm rests, assist cords, ash receivers in the rear doors, robe ropes, dome and corner lights, Garnish mouldings and instrument board are mahogany finish. Individual instru- ments of pleasing design are used in both chassis, Wood whels are stand- ard and wire wheels optional. The eight has automatic radiator shutters. Both cars are fitted with a water thermostat. The cooling systems have 10 per cent greater capacity. $4,298,002 7 FOR STATE ROADS Federal Aid Unobligated by North Dakota Is Report- ed $639,904 Washington, 12.—(®)—The ees as, proxicoenely. eS ied ment. It. addi« tion to the many mechanical ad- vancements, the Oldsmobile has besn redesigned along strikingly beautiful lines, and despite this added valué Prices have been materially. The lines of the new Oldsmobile re- fect a new thought in dignified styl- ing. A deep, finely proportioned rad- iator with double tie rods flanked by sweeping one-piece fenders and ‘bord- ered by a heavy single bar chromium bumper combine to form a distinctive and attractive front end. This strik- ing effect is continued by the sweep of the streamlined hood and cowl and the graceful contours of the Fisher built bodies. Lyzurious interior fit- tings are in harmony with the mod- ish lines. Chief among the engineering im- provements are downdraft carbure- tion and manifolding, which add ma- terially to the incfeased power and speed; Syncro-megh transmission with @ quiet second gear regarded as one of the outstanding transmission de- velopments of the year; carburetor intake silencer combined with the latest type air cleaner, complete in- sulation between chassis and body and added strength and quietness made posite by @ new type of body construction. ‘These improvements have increased the horsepower of the engine to 65 brake we tone teens tests ae General Motors proving ow this new Oldsmobile Will acoelerate in high gear fronr five to 60 miles per hour in 30.8 seconds and will reach a speed of 22.8 miles per hour at the Peak of a 1400-foot 11.6 per cent ‘ade from a 10-mile per hour start it the base of the hill. Second Gear The new Oldsmobile not only is equipped with the Syncro-mesh transmission but also is the first au- tomopile to have this smooth type of gear shift combined with a quiet sec- ond gear. ‘The ism has been redesigned to make pos- entire transmission mechan- | porisat sible these two much-desired fea- tures of easy driving.- Low gear and reverse gear have been placed in the center of the transmission and high gear, or direct drive, and second gear have been placed on the front ang rear ends. The travel of the gear sh¥t lever first brings the gears closer together. At the same time it e1 @ cone clutch arrangement ich brings both meshing gears to the same speed. Further travel of the shift lever bethgs the locking device in proper Position and the final movement locks the two gears by means of atuds on one gear entering on the antes new. It permits full use of the added en- gine power, giving second gear speeds Pin excess of 43 miles an hour, and supplies a type of acceleration that Se ee Increased power, speed and accel- eration are due chiefly to downdraft carburetion and manifolding together with associated improvements which have multiplied the advantages of the downdraft principle. development the fuel mixture follows @ gravity-aided downward course Sprumtiont its travel to the clyinders. enters through @ combination in- take silencer and sir cleaner which is lovated above the carburetor and direetly under the center of the hood. ‘Traveling downward into a new type carburetor specially designed for the new Oldsmobile, the air is mixed with the gasoline brought to the higher leyel by a fuel pump. The fuel mix- ture continues its downward course, Passing th dy automatic mani- fold heater, into the clyinders. ‘This automatic manifold heater is new development which materially improves car performance. The heat- er chamber is built around the intake manifold and the exhaust manifold 4g cannected to it. The heater is pro- vided with an automatic valve, which regulates the amount of exhaust gas by-passed through the heater body so that much more heat is trans- at low speeds than at high speeds, thus giving more uniform va- tion conditions throughout the whole range. This vaporises any heavy Attend ends of gasoline while the engine is cold and helps low speed opefation, while at higher speeds when pre- heating is not required, the exhaust is deflected away from the intake heat- er by the automatic valve, Engine Operation Smoother Smoother engine operation has been obtained through a finely balanced four-bearing crankshaft and a new type of torsional vibration damper. The damper is designed as part of the fan driving pulley assembly. Through four sets of leaf springs flex- ibly mounted in the cireular damper to permit slight movements or oscjl- lations, torsional vibrations occurring in the shaft at certain speeds are ab- sorbed and neutralized. Other noteworthy new features of the engine include a new type piston and an advanced of the mani- fold intake port. Pull pressure lubrication to all im- portant rotating and reciprocating parts, including main, camshaft, con- necting rod and piston provided. A new arrangement of oil pump and screeh prevents clogging of the system even in below zero weather, An improved system of crankcase ventilation and an oil filter increase the effitiency of the lubri- cating system. Summer-starting all year ‘round is another new and important advance- ment contained in the new Oldsmo- bile. Part of this Mit Hoagie! to ignore below zero tempera’ is due to the improved down draft carbure- tion and manifolding, ‘The design of the carburetor plays part in this positive starting meth- od. One feature of the design is a small poppet valve incorporated in the body of the choke butterfly valve. The poppet valve automatically opens gnd prevents the carburetor from becom- ing flooded even at full choke after the engine has started. ‘The four rubber engine mountings rave been newly designed so that ad- justments are not required. Another entirely new feature is a propellor shaft centering device. This consists of a spindle extending from the pro- pellor shaft into a bearing in the for- ward universal joint and keeps the shaft correctly centered under all conditions and eliminates the possi- bility of whip in the forward end. An additional safety factor is in- cluded in the new _ self-energizin four-wheel brake hookup, which fea- tures a new type cross-shaft.
