a Ow EeP tase TATE OAKLAND EIGHT IS CHEAPER: DESPITE ITS IMPROVEMENTS Transmission, Acceleration, Mo- tor and Body Develop- ments Outstanding Style, performance and comfort in @ degree new to its field, feature the 1931 Oakland Eight line which will ‘be on display at the Bismarck Auto- mobile Show. Despite scores of body and chassis refinements, the new cars ere offered at base prices below the minimum price at which any Oakland Eight previously has been introduced, according to the Stair Motor com~- pany, Bismarck dealers. A new type of syncro-mesh trans- mission with quiet shift permitting acceleration up to 40 to 45 miles per hour, extensive rubber insulation, in- cluding rubber spring shackle bush- ings, an ingenious combination of in- take silencer and air cleaner, new electro-plated pistons and heavier “big-tooth” axle gears—these repre- sent only a few of the many mechan- ical improvements which enable the chassis of the new Oakland to pro- vide the full poe ow tee and’ comfort suggest i graceful lines of the smartly-tail- ored Fisher bodies. Six bodies, comfortable and luxuri- ously fitted, are offered in the line which includes: the two and four- door sedan, the four-door custom se- dan, the standard and sport coupe and the new convertible coupe. Perhaps, the most vital advance in the new Oakland is found in the‘in- stant and enthusiastic response to the throttle of the big 85-horsepower “v"-type motor and the quick, quiet gear shifting made possible by the syncro-mesh helical gears of the new transmission. Use of the new transmission pro- vides many advantages including: 1, Effortless shifting of gears either up or down, at any speed. 2. Quieter operation in second gear. 3. Rapid acceleration. 4. Easy shifting from high to in- termediate gear for climbing hills or to take full advantage of the tre- mendous second gear acceleration in passing cars. Another important feature of the new car is the lavish use of a special compound of rubber and rubber pre- servatives to cushion and silence both ‘body and chassis by eliminating met- al-to-metal contact at more than 40 points. This insulation includes all spring shackle bushings and even ex- tends to such details as the attach- ment of ‘the rear springs to the rear] tory axles. The factor of safety has been stressed throughout. The new mech- anical internal expanding brakes have been enlarged to a diameter of 13 inches, affording a braking area of 232 square inches, Also brake linings are accurately ground to assure bet- ter contact between linings and drum. ‘The lateral strength of the frame has been increased more than 50 per cent and running boards are of steel. The smart new Fisher bodies are characterized by slanting windshield pillars of narrower design and an im- proved sun visor, both contributing to improved vision. Distinctive belt mouldings add character and indi- viduality. A new “V-shaped chrome- plated radiator shell with chrome- Piated wire screen the @ change in the VV Fisher windshield. All floor openings are sealed and all models are provided with felt-backed Tubber floor mats. Cowls and wind- shield pillars are integral without the usual joint, roofs are of strove construction and a new method of manufacturing the tonneau sides re- duces the possibility of squeaks, All these body improvements, to- gether with the extensive rubber in- sulation of the chassis, combine to Provide in the 1931 Oakland Eights @ new degree of silent riding com- HERBERT BAUGH, INVENTOR OF TIRE MAN'S BENEFACTOR Ohioan Gets Great Satisfaction of Watching Trucks Load- ed With Tires North Canton, O., March 11—(7)}— A little grain of corn planted in fer- tile. soil soon can be multiplied into @ whole field and the field multiplied into a great harvest for a nation. This was the first tire factory in the country. To turn out the first tire ever made in the United States seems to Baughman a triumph. The ‘output of the factory was 35 tires a day—contrasted with the out- put of many thousands in a large fac- tory today where a bicycle tire can be built up in five minutes or less and vulcanized in 15. As the output of Baughman’s fac- increased a demand was created for a pneumatic buggy tire. Baugh- man designed one to be bolted on, the bolt vulcanized into the rubber fa- bric, Baughman’s inventiveness brought him the post of official experimenter for his company. It was in this ca- pacity that he created the company’s first pneumatic tire for the automo- bile. It was of faitly good size, 34 inches by 6, It weighed 88 pounds. New, Bijur automatic dhassis lubri- cation which reaches 22 vital chassis points as the engine runs, steel en- cased, lifetime lubricated springs, double action hydraulic shock ab- sorbers, and many additional me- chanical features of the former Twin- Ignition Eight all aid in unequaled performance. Refinement of the en- tire cooling system with its large ca- pacity radiator, thermostatically con- trolled radiator shutters, self oiling fan and new nitrided pump shaft, which gives this important unit a de- gree of hardness second only to the diamond, and is thus impervious to wear, brings the system to its high- est efficiency.
