For some seven years past, Lake {| Bemidji has been dotted, principally through the center, from Diamond Point eastward toward the outlet of the Mississippi river, with the little tar-covered houses wherein is placed a stove and the interior made com- fortable for the occupant, who sits beside a big hole and awaits the arrival of the big “‘sharks” (pickerel) which can be plainly seen in the water. For the past three winters, fishing through the ice has not been very good, on Lake Bemidji, for some reason; and there are fewer houses DR.KING'S NEW DISCOVERY Will Surely Stop That Gough. "on the lake this winter than since theuse of a. fish house was made lawful by act of the legislature. Certain requirements must be complied with, before one can use a fish ‘house, t h e principal one of which is that the person desiring to use the fish house must first procure a license theretor from the .State Game and Fish Com- mission, stating that he desires to secure pickerel, suckers, red horse, carp and bull heads. The locating of these fish houses, with their holes in the ice, are un- doubtedly of benefit to the fish, which are hemmed in under the frozen waters, as the holes furnish air for the finny ones. One of the first fisherman to haul his fish house to the lake was T. J. Miller, the “insurance man,” who is one of the most successful winter fishermen in this section. Bad Fire at Cass Lake. Cass Lake, Dec. 17.—12 M.— (Special to Pioneer.)—Fire of un- known origin, but supposed to have started from a stove, last night did severe damage to David Latandress’ store and also very nearly destroyed the Great Northern building, the DropeFty of Ole Farguson. o Thefire was discovered about mid- night and had gained considerable headway. The local firemen respond- ed'and did yoeman service in keep- ing the flames from spreading and confined the fire to the Latandress and Great Northern building. It is estimated that fully $1,000 damage was done by the fire. The damage to the Latandress building is only partially covered by in- surance, but it is believed that all the damage to the Great Northern building was dully covered by in- surance. Moral: Insure with the T. J. Miller Insurance Agency. Wm. McKinnon Is Dying.
