te MAURETANIA LOSS LESS THAN FEARED ‘About Fifty Cabins on E Deck Burned—New Schedules for Passengers. * SOUTHAMPTON, July 26 (Asso- elated Press).—After a battle lasting more than twelve hours the flames on board the Cunarder Mauretania were finally conquered by the fire- men early to-day. The damage is not so extensive as was feared at first, but considerable time will be required to put the big vessel into shape. Meanwhile the pas- sengers booked to sail on the Maure- tania will be transferred to other ships. No estimate of the damage in moncy i posible as yet. ‘The fire originated in a first-class cabin on the starboard side of the EB deck, and fifty cabins on that deck, extending across the ship and for- ward of the engine room bulkhead for 8 feet, were destroyed. Thi flooring of the main saloon on the 1D} deck was badly burned and buckled. ‘The priceless carved wood panelling | im the saloon, for which the Maure- tania was famous, is untouched ex- cept for a few scorched places. Sheriff Kelly of Suffolk County, who has been investigating the killing of Henry G. Hemming on the night of July 14 at the Duck Island home of his wife, is in this city to-day to obtain further affidavits from witnesses of the shooting. He said he would also confer with John G.
