Strange Mixture of Craft and Christianity—Law Intervening. SIES There has been another outbreak of kahunaism in Hawali with the result that Eugenia. He is charg- ed with having caused the death of an old native by beating him on the head with a Bible in order to drive the devils from his body. This case is one of the most unique in the annals of kahunalsm in the islands. It appears from the story told at the trial in the District Court that a-native In the Pune district became ill and the Govern- ment physician, Dr. Holland, was called in. He was treating the man with some hope of curing him, when the native call- ed in a kahuna, believing that the physi- cian was net curing him rapidly eneugh. The kahuna !mmediately threw away the | remedies prescribed by the physieian and dlagnosed the case for himself. He found that the man was possessed of red devils, and after several incantations, in which the ald of spirits was invoked, decided that the only way to drive out the devils was by liberal application of the Bible to the head of the patient. The sick man was compelled to sit upright in his bed and was then beaten vigorously by the kahuna with a heavy volume of the serip- tures. When the kahuna's arm tired the man's wife was forced to continue the treatment, until the man sank uncon- A few days afterward the man was beaten even more with the Bible and he died. bt The kahuna was arrested, first on the | charge of practicing witchcraft, but af- s | terward the charge was changed to man- slaughter. The man made no defense. He said that he had done his best for his patient, but the devils had conquered. B 01d-Time Kitchens. ‘With the best will in the world, I have discovered little about the classical kitch- en, except that it existed, that it proba- bly stood apart from the house, and that sometimes it was provided with a chim- ney. When one remembers the banquets of Athenaeus and Lucullus, or, for that | matter, the Sabine fare of Horace, this chimney might be taken ior granted. But, | long the luxury of the few, for the chim- neyless kitchen survived until such recent time that to-day there is still near Ox- ford, as cooks in the university will tell you with archaeological pride, an ancient kitchen where a circle of holes round the ence for their art—the “godiike art of cooking,” some of them called it—that no doubt they understood how to control the holes we think so barbarous. Cooks who - >uld quote Homer and knew Plato by heart, and who thought the mastery of all the arts and sciences a mere prepara- tory course to the study of cookery. never could have been willing to work in a kitchen reeking with smoke like a croft- er's cottage. Indeed, one among them went so far as to declare an architectural training necessary to the cook, so that he might build his kitchen to suit himself, and secure the right amount of light, and avoid being exposed to all the winds that blow, for smoke, he wisely observed, ac- cording to which way it goes, makes a And 1 fancy there are times when the chef to-day would be ready to give up his chimney for the chance of playing his own architect.—Harper's Bazar. —_—————— Profits of the Promoter. There has been during recent years no business so profitable as that of the pro- moter; the country has seea him enter the flelds of industry, commerce and fin- ance a beggar, down at the heel, and it, has seen him, only a little later, browsing in the rich pastures thereof, a gorged millionaire, fat as the fatted calf killed for the home-coming of the prodigal son. ‘Whether the corporation he promoted was bogus or real, whether it brought sudden wealth or as sudden ruin to the honest buyers of its stocks mattered little to the promoter. His profits were certain. He did not become rich by buying stock in the open market, but by selling it to the con- fiding public. When he promoted a new corporation he had had set apart for him a goodly number of shares of “‘preferred” and ‘‘common’ stock. If the watering, though a deluge, did not preclude the earning of dividends the promoter re- tained a partof hisallotments; if the pros- pects of dividends were unpromising he unloaded his holdings upon the innocent sheep that had strayed into the market They got shern of their money; he be a millionaire. N 135, | INVESTIGATION OF PRACTICE. This case has caused an invesi to be made of the practice of n;m-‘: in the islands. Kahunaism is prohibited Py law. It is a relic of ancient Hawait, and all the efforts of the missionasies. from the day of their arrival, have been insufficient to stamp it out. It is witch- craft, pure and simple, but even some of the educated people among the Hawafiars believe in it. There is something in it akin to.the faith cure. The younger element is without fear of it, but nmo::ut‘::.eld:: natives it is estimated that there is one kahuna to every fifty people. For kahu- nalsm is a lucrative business. An attempt was made at the last session of the i g lature to secure the repeal of the law pro- hibiting the practice of witcheraft, but it failed to get through the Senate, though all the patives voted for it. At the ses- slon just closed another effort to legalize the practice of the black art, though in a round about way, was made. A bil! was introduced to permit the practice of med:- cine without a license, which was meaut for the kahuna and no one else, A few months ago a woman witch doe- tor in Lahaina on Maui was sent to prison for causing the death of a father and twe sons who, she said, had killed the pet cat of her favorite niece. All three of the men became il! and the kahuna was called in to cure them. They died as a result of her treatment. She sdmitted that she practiced kahunaism. She said that she did her best to save the lives of her patients, but their great sin :n killing the cat had made cure impossible. POWER OF THE KAHUNA. The kahuna has of late become some- what modernized, or perhaps it is only that fakers have replaced the real thing. Many of them are blackmailers pure and They claim power to summon spirits at will, and unless they receive everything they want In the form of | money or food, the credulous native is likely to suffer from their wiles. The kahunas claim descent from the devil, and the principal theory of their practice which leave their bodies at night and ter other people, also that spirits of de- | ceased relatives always return to earth to inflict their presence upon peopl have known in life. The ) mmen::e: small consideration kills these wandering spirits and permits the native to 8o in peace. Pigs and white chickens must be sacrificed to obtain this. The man who is inflicted with the spirits must provide the c:lckens and pigs—and the kahuna eats them. The kahuna also claims the power of | praying a person to death, and it is not infrequent that cases are reported, too, where these witches are employed for this purpose. Some cases are reported, too, where the kahuna has been successful. for the prayers so work upon the fears of the superstitious native that it is no wonder he dies.
