C., June 13).—A considerable sensa- tion was caused to-day by the an- nouncement that Mr. Tsukahara, president of the Uraga Dock Company, had resigned his position in consequence of the failure of his company to turn out United States gunboats for the Philippines in accordance with speci- ficatio Two boats have been rejected by Governor Taft and the remaining three are said to be equally inadequate, the boats, it is said, drawing one foot more than the specifications called for, which makes them unfit for coast work. Governor Taft has had an expert inves- tigating the matter, who discovered that bribery had been resorted to to cover up the dishonest work.
