THE SAN FRANCISCO CALL, SUNDAY, APRIL 0RPEDD BOATS 00 FINE WORK Grampus and Pike Meet All the Tests of Standardization. Vessels Aimed to Destroy Warships Exceed the Requirements. eanesRe B The fourth day of the offictal trials of the new submarine torpedo-boats Gram- | pus and Pike was devoted to the final tests for their standardization. In these they were entirely successful, not only meéting but exceeding the requirements of the Government. The weather was fine, the bay smooth and atmosphere clear, so that no trouble was experienced in taking accurate ob-| gervations. The first test was given to the Pike on submerged trial. She was glven three half-mile double runs, first at full speed, then Intermedlate and last at low speed. She acquitted herself admirably, taking her dives easily and maintaining her sub- | merged course with only the slightest va- | She scored 7.2 knots against the required 7 kanots. She was In command of Captain F. J. Cabel, the Government belng represented by Lieu- tenant Commander Lopez, Assistant Na- val Constructor L. 8. Adams and Ensign F. 0. Branch. In the afternoon the Grampus went through her flna! trial in light condition, the tests taking placo at flood tide. The trial consisted of thrse double-mile runs over the prescribed course, both with and against the tide. She was first run under two cylinders, then three and finally at full speed, scoring 8.45 knots, leaving .45 rlation noticeable. {in her favar. ‘These wound up the standardizing tests of both boats. L. Y. Spear, the general manager of the Holland Torpedo-boat Company, and Marley F. Hay, who superintended the construetion of the vessels, both expressed themselves as being highly delighted at the outcome and entirely satisfled with the splendid achievements of the subma- Tine wonders. A great deal of waluable time was wasted and much annoyance occasioned by & number of small craft that came around Hunters Point and attempted to run directly across the course. In two instances the tender was compelled to tow salt laden schooners for a long distance, and again obliged to chase off 2 fishing | smack that was steering for the center of the course. Later on the four-masted schooner Alpha, sugar laden, from Hono- lulu, while tryinz to come alongside the sugar refinery stuck fast in the mud, com- pletely cutting out the starting shore range, and procecdings were delayed until Lieutenant Commander George 1. Staf. ford, U. 8. A.. acted for Captain Whiting, president of the hoard, and followed the course on the tug Rellef, which acted as tender. On Monday the most interesting and ' spectacular part of the trials will take | place—the ten-mile awash runs and the torpedo firing at targets placed near Hun- | ters Point. Detective Burns Departs. United States Secret Service Agent Wil- llam J. Burns left for Washington yester- day morning, his duties in connectlon with the prosecution of Walter N. Dim- mick having come to an end with the ver- dict of conviction. Mr. Burns produced and arranged all the evidence for prosecution, and it was he who made ft possible to convict the accused. When Prince Henry of Germany was in this country a few months ago Mr. Burns act- ed as his bodyguard, having been selected by Chief Wilkie as belng the best man in the service for that responsible duty. The secret service man made hosts of friends during his stay in this city. @ i @ trict, as shown by the great number of lots sold In that sectlon south of the park recently to people intending to build homes thereon. The desire for improve- ments by the residents there is evinced by the movement of the Ocean Boulevard Improvement Club to grade I, J and K streets from the Forty-ninth avenue boulevard east to Forty-sixth avenue, the laying of water mains by the water com- peny and the erection of several arc| lights on the boulevard.
