Contractor 0'Brien Will Not Work on the Library Roof in Winter. Commissioners Not Willing to Risk the Damage to the Books. Covious, driving rain drenched the city from an early hour until nearly noon yes- terday, and there was the usual amount of damage 1o property through neglect to prepare for the downpour. The City Hall suffered, of course. The portions of tl:e structure that are roofless b>cause of the operations of Contractor O'Brier let in the water in large quanti- ties, and by the time the city employes went to work it was dripping into cor- riders and offices in a manrer thatthreat- ened ruin to public records. ‘When the City Hall Commissioners met the deluge was the main topic of discus- sion. Commissioner Creswell stated that the portions of the hall where there was most danger from water had been pro- tected and that the damage, unless the storm was long and severe, would not be great. He stated that the compieted por- tions of the roof faited to show a leak of any kind. The question of reconstructing the portion of the roof over the Free Li- brary was brought up by a communica- tionfrom the trustees of the institution who asked that the work be vostponed until spring in order to obviate danger (0 the books. Supervisor® Britt, who was present, stated that the trustees had applied to the Supervisors for some place to store the books, but that the board did not see its way clear to furnish the necessary accom- modations. He suggested that the con- tractor be given time to finish the work when the danger was over. Contractor O'Brien madea plea for an extension of time on the ground that it would be dangerous to begin work on the roof over the library at the present time, He was given a nine months’ extension, but Commissioner Broderick gave notice that he would not vote for the payment of any salzries while work was suspended.
