BURKE Candidate for State’s Attorney of Pem- bina County on the Republican Ticket A sogial member of the Nonpartisan League and a sympathizer with the - Political Advertisement . League Metnbe.f Writes Important Letter. TO LEAGUE MEMBERS, GRAND FORKS COUNTY: One of the most important contests in Grand Forks county is the de:_tio:{ of State’s Attorney. . Mr. Sveinbjorn Johnson is the Democratic nominee and has made a clean, splendid campaign. He has.lived in North Dakota for over 29 years and came to Grand Forks for the first time 15 years ago to enter the University. He secured his education by hia own efforts, ‘Without a dollar he entered the University and by doing janitor work, waiting on table and displaying the grit of his old Norse ancestors, worked his way through school. He practiced law for a year or more in Pembina county and during the last four sessions of the. legislature at Bismarck he assisted members "in preparation of the most important legislative bills. Dur- ing these sessions he has been the expert draftsman at Bismarck. The best evidence of the service rendered by Sveinbjorn Johnson to the Legislature, wholly Republican, was the passage ‘of a@mfi)lufion by ananimous vote indorsing and commending Mr. Johnson far his help during n.- Mr. Johnson's opponent is asking for support on the grounds: First, Because he is married and needs help from the county, and Second, Because he is indorsed by the Grand Forks Herald and the present stute’s attorney who has been in office for-six years and promised the voters ‘two years ago that he would mnot be a candiddte again, but who mow wants to name his successor. Mr, Johnson's opponent has had far better opportunities than the average farmer's son hns His family gave him every advantage. to U. 8. Senator Hansbrough at a large sal For a number of years he was private secretary lary. Immediately afterwards he was made assistant state’s attorney which has brought him about $4000.00. Besides this, he has a private law practice that brings him a large income. Besides receiving money from the county and from private practice, he has for several years been, and now is, U. S. Referee in Bankruptcy .and has collected and retained liberal fees by virtue of that office. Sveinbjorn Johnson has had 16 one to help him. He has made his own way by hard work and during the school vacations he worked on a farm. The Grand Forks Herald is now editorially opposing Mr. Johnson's election and is support- ing his opponent. The leaders of the fight sgainst the League in Grand Forks are opposed to Mr. Johnson's election and are supporting his opponent because so many of the League members who know the situation are supporting Mr. Johnson and because Mr. Johnson supported some of the League candidates before the primary election last summer. should vote for and support Mr. Jolinson; oth Every friend of the League ers should support him because he is an able lawyer and will be an honest and efficient: state’s attorney. ‘G. THOMPSON, Republican Member, Walle Township, 7 Political Advertisment’ TO THE VOTERS OF LA MOURE COUNTY Ladies and Gentlemen: . I will greatly appreciate your support in the election this fall. Respectfully N. B. KNAPP CANDIDATE FOR COUNTY SUPERIN- TENDENT OF SCHOOLS LA MOURE 2 COUNTY, N. D. Political Advertisement H." A. BRONSON CANDIDATE FOR DICTRICT JUDGE of the First Judicial District (Grand Forks and Nelson Counties) A Man of the People and For the People Mr. Bronson is forty-two years of age; he came to this state in 1890.. He is a graduate of. the University -of North Dakota, receiving from that institution the Degree of Master of Arts in 1895, For over fourteen years he has been a lecturer on the Law of Real Property at the Law School of our State University. Mr. Bronson is also recognizel as a writer on law subjects, he being the author of “Bronson on Recitals in Muni- cipal Bonds” and “Bronson on Fixtures.” His ability and standing as a lawyer was recognized in Chicago this year when he was elected as Vice-President of the American Bars Association for the State of North-Dakota. Mr. Bronson has operated a farm for fourteen years in Grand Forks County. He has had a long experience at the bar and is recognized as an able lawyer, with a large practice at Grand Forks, North Dakota. His record as Senator during two ses- _sions of the Legislature shows that he is a man of the people, that he is effi- cient, able and attentive to duties. It is not often that a legislator will be found who is fearless and attentive enough to vote on every bill that comes up for passage during two sessions of the legislature, and this Mr. Bronson has done, excepting one bill, concerning which he was excused from- voting by reason of its affecting a board upon which he was a member. Mr. Bronson has received many in- dorsements from labor organizations and the farmers. He intreduced. in the senate the Workmen’s Compensation Act, and it did pass in the Senate, but was killed in the house ‘during’ the last session, of the legislature. He - intro- duced in two different sessions of - the legislature the Anti-Ambulance Chasing Act, which passed two sessions of the legislature, but was vetoed both times by Governor Hanna. He advocated re- duction in the rates of interest, and " these reductions in the rates of interest have now been made by.law., . ' Mr. Bronson has also received muc commendation from the members of the Equity Society for his fight put up in the senate to preserve the Terminal Ele- vator Fund. Y. 1t is largely through his speeches in the senate denouncing attempted action of the legislature in " disregarding the express Will of the people, in two dif- ferent elections, concerning this terminal elevator fund, and the methods that the stalwart machine were using in"attempt- ing to wipe .out this - trust fund, that aroused\the people of the state to de- mand a. referendum to the people con- cerning this terminal elevator fund bill, Mr. Bronson received an endorsement from the Equity members as a national delegate on the LaFollette ticket last spring, but was unable to accept the same on account of conflicting engage- ments in June, 1916, His long residence in this state, hig learning and ability as™ a« lawyer, his legislative record of eclean service for the people and of continuous fighting against the gang politicians _and machine methods, his progressive ideals and clean life eminently and ‘well' qualify him for the position of District Judge.
