ENTILLY township, located in the northeastern part of Polk county, Minnesota, is a region where business co-operative bankruptey. - Twenty years ago residents of this now prosperous community could not borrow a hundred dollars each. Today practically, any one of them can go to banks at Crookston and Red Lake Falls and get any amount of money within ‘reason upon their straight note. And a little' co-operative cheese factory, a building not half as large as the average farmer’s barn, saved the day. : The history of Gentilly township réads like a fairy tale and the Good Fairy is Father Theillon, the Catholic priest of the community. settlers located in Gentilly township in the early nineties, they saw the ground was rich and valuable, but thousands and thousands of stones scattered over the sections made the wark of tilling difficult. With infinite labor and patience these erstwhile French and - ICanadian peasants cleared away these stones, slowly but surely and gradually put in larger and larger crops. They simply pay two cents a pound to the factory to have the cheese made from their milk. The ' shareholders participate in the profits of the factory, which is entirely co-operative, the only items deducted from the gross earnings being the actual running expenses. Gradually the factory has grown in volume of business, although the orig- inal little old building still remains. Next year a larger and more modern ‘plant is to be erected. This year the last payments on the splendid new $30,000 Roman Catholic church at Gentilly are being paid up This splendid church is in part a tribute of gratitude to Father Theillon for his services to the community. The village of Gentilly, where the church is located, is but a village of seventy-five inhabi- tants, yet the church itself would be a credit to any city of 25,000 population. Artistically decorated, it rises in the middle of a prosperous and rich com- munity, where every farmer of the 312 in the congregation has a herd of milch cows numbering from ten to one hundred. And they all thank co-operation for their prosperity. Were it not for the small co-operative factory, that turns out but one finished product, who can say what Gentilly township would be 505 N P.
