4 ‘The Indian Wer te Oregen. Ie the course of an interview which we had a few days age, wih aD Mmtelligent gentleman from Oregon, where Ihe bas lived for many years, and with the history of ‘which he is thoroughly acquainted, we obtained the fol- Iowing particulars of the war now existing in that terri- fory, between the whites and the Indians. Hostilities comme ced in October last, in consequence @f some murders committed by the Indians upon aome of the inbaditants of Washington and Oregon Territories, ‘while on their wey to and from the Colville gold mines, ‘which are situated near FortColville,on the GolumbiaRiver. ‘Hho number of whites who had been killed in this manner, We ‘aid to be twenty-five, and some of these were subjected te the most fiendish tortures. One woman and her hus- ‘and were tied together by the heels, then slung on ® pole over a siow fire, and burned to death. Another ‘weman bad her breasts cut off, and was then literally ‘Mayed alive; while others bad red hot irons run into the ‘macs tender parts of their bodies. The tortures they suf- fered are too horrible to detail. The white population Became greatly incensed at these murders, and alarmed for weir own safety, demanded that the authorities should make an ‘nvestigation into the cause of them. The Bedian Agent for that section, Mr. Bollon, accordingly ‘went into the country of tae Yackamaws for this pur- pose, but was himself murdered. A military expedition, comprising a bundred men, was now seut, under the @ommand of Major Haller, against the Indians, whom they met in large force, numbering from twelve to tit teem hundred mounted warriors. An engagement en- wed, which ended in the repulse of the whites, woo had about twenty killed and wounded.
