+ Your correspondent ** B,” whic FATHER MATHEWS FAREWELL ADDRESS. To the Citizens of the United States. Deaxty Beroven Frienps :— My mission amongst you closes to-day. I can- wot take my final departure from the shores of your great and prosperous country, without pub- liely recording my deep and grateful appreciation of the generous sympathy, the delicate attention, and the unremitting kindness which 1 have expe- rienced in every section of this vast Union. Tho Dobie reception which you have spontaneously ten- dered to a stranger, known merely ag an humble missionary in the cause of moral reform, proves the devotion of your people to the interests of humanity, however feebly championed, and haa endeared Awerica and her people to me by @ thousand ties too sacred for utterance. Though the renewed attacks of @ painful and insidious malady, have rendered it impossible that I could (without immi- nent danger to my life), make those public exer- tions which were never spared by me in the days of my heslth and of my vigor, I yet thank heaven, kave been instrumental in adding to the ranks of temperance over 600,000 disciples in America. I have been much cheered during the past week, by the receipt of letters from all parts of the States, bearing unimpeachable testimony to the strict fidelity with which this voluntary obligation is ob- served. I need scarcely add, that virtue, and the duties which religion inculcates, together with Peace, plenty, domestic eomfort, health, and hap- pinese, have everywhere follewed in its train. I cannot omit this opportunity of bearing my grateful testimony tothe generous and valuable co- operation which I have received, in the pro:ecution of my mission, from the public press of America. ‘Whatever may be the party or sectional differences that separate those influential expositors of pabli inion, all recognized, in the simple principle which | enunciated, a common ground of paternal union; and acting in that Christian spirit have, with scarcely an exception, over freoly tendere their valuable support and advocacy to the caus) of temperance, emphatically the cause of virtue, patriotiem and morality. If the affectionate sym- pathy and kindness of the American people have at all times beon generously extended to me during my tour, how much more intense has this nobie feel- ing become as the period approached for my do- parture?! How can I find langaage to thank the generous, the high-souled, the noble Henry Clay, my disinterested advocate—my dearly cherished friend? How can I express the meafure of my obii- gation to the benevolent Wm. Corceran, of Wash- ington ? to the public spirited and philanthropic Henry Grinnell ? to your merchant princes, E. K. Colling and Robert Kermitt ? to the amiable and gifted archbishop of New York, whose delicate and unremitting attention will never be forgotten by bis honored guest ? to the host of kind friends in this city, in Philadelphia, Boston, Albany, New Orleang, St. Louis, Cincinnati, and through the Union, who have responded to Mr. Clay’s appeal, and in their farewell present have furnished a m>- morial of gratitude and generosity too high- ly appreciated by the object of their sympathy and solicitude--too deeply engraven on his keart to be aeeavettient in the hacknied hrases sanctioned by conventional usage — | here sre emotions of gratitude too intense for language to convey; were it otherwiae, ppadly would I attempt to give expression to my profound thanks to my gifted and amiable countrywoman, Miss Catherine Hays. Never will I forget the sympathy felt by that noble minded lady, or the spontaneous generosity (so characteristic of her Irish heart) which prompted her recent grateful and substantial | * liment. Never will this noble act be forgotten ‘ather Mathew, and when his earthly pilgrim- | ‘ale over, when his stewardship ceases, and he is @ed to a state of future existence, where even tie syenomed ehaft of the slanderer cannot reach, *,g may her honored name be pronounced with | tude and respect by the sons and daughters of Sad beauteous isle which she loves so well. To y own beloved countrymen I most affectionately | nder a few words of parting advice. You have, .” dearly beloved friends, relinquished the land of “ut birth, endeared to you ry a thousan: ainiscences, to seek on these distant shores that auneration for industry and toil too often deniod <patbome. You are presented here witha bound- # field of yeetionle employment, and every ia ~jyement held out to persevering industry. You 9 received aud welcomed into the great American ne with feelings of sympathy, kindness and hip. After afew years you become citizens this great republic, whose vast territorial exten + bounds in all the matorials of mineral agricultur» and commercial wealth; the avenues to honor and .ame are liberally thrown open to you aud to your children, and no impediment (save of your own creation) exists to prevent you att: the high- est social and civic distinction, and will you aay longer permit those glorious opportunities to pass unimproved, or, rather, will ee not, by stadying self-respect, and acquir' bits suited to your new position, to reflect ion alike on the land of ion birth and of your adoption? I implore you, I would with my dying breath, to discard forev those foolish divisions—those insensate quarrels — those factious broils (too often, alas, the fruits ns | intemperance) in which your country is disgrace the peace and order of society violated, and t ths laws of heaven trampled on and oaeeget Oh, how painful is the contrast between th gs which generate those foolish local animositi ongst the common inhabitants of a country, the entire area of which would but fi inconsiderable section of of this Union, ani that | sive spirit of ro. which ant of this mighty republic— ‘acific—from Maine to California—glory in the title of an American citi- 76) | fond | ends and fellow-countrymen-I now bid youa reluctant, a final farewell. There is nothing new in the stock market. The trans- actions continue to about the usual extent, and prices without any material alteration. Erie Railroad advanced ‘a trifle to-day from the opening, and Harlem fell off from the opening. It is semi-officially stated that the Pacific, for Liverpool, to-morrow, will take out a million of dollars at least, in epecie, If she takes that amount, the aggre- gate shipments for the week will be about two millions anda halfcf dollars, Our arrivals from California have been about three millions. The stock market does not seem to fee) the influence of this activity in specie, either way, and the impression is gaining strength in our miad that epeculation for the season is over. The receipts at the office of the Asaitant Treasurer of this port, to-day, amounted te $38,056 18; payments, $93,900 98;—balance, $3,523,870 70, In a comparative statement of earnings of the Norwich aud Worcester Railroad Company, for October, 1850 and 1851, it appeared that the receipts were tess for the month this year than last. The deficiency was caused by the imecrease for mail and express services not being included im full. We understand that the net earningsof the company for the past four months, amount to fifty thousand dollars, equal to a dividend of two and a half per cent om the capital stock. The net earnings for the next two months will, it is estimated, add at least one per cent to the above. The income in October, 1850, was greater than for apy previous month for years. ‘The Chemung Railroad Company has declared a semi- apnual dividend of four per cent, payable on the 10th inst, This is the regular per eent dividend semi-annu- ally. This road is leased to the Erie Railroad Company fer ten years, at eight per cent on the capital, besides Keeping the road in repair. The capital is $450,000, repre- sented by $330,000 in stock, and $90,000 in convertible bonds The read was from Elmira to Jefferson, and is a Very important connecting link between the central line of railroads and the Erie Railroad. The annexed statement exhibits the emount of Cali fornia gold received at the mint, Philadelphia, the amcunt of gold coinage, and the shipments of specie from this port, in each of the first ten moaths of the present year:— Movements or Brecte any Butti0s, To es Isr, 1351 Gok Receipts of Id. October. Totals.. 1,779, 707 $33,026,978 ++ 86,727,900 40,657,522 This is avery curious table. The receipts of Califor nia gold are made up from the returas of the Mint, Philadelphia, The aggregate does not, therefore, in- clude all the gold received from California, Tne arrivals at New Orleans and other ports, may or may not be in- cluded im this statement. Steamers from Chagres, bound to New York, have put into Norfolk, Savannah, Mobile, &t which points many peasengers, with gold, left, aad proceeded homeward. We have not, therefore, any sccount of the receipts at those places. It would not be extravagant to estimate the receipts of California geld, at all the Atlantic ports, up to the 1st of November, this year, independent of those at the Mint, Philadelphia, at ten millions cf dollars, which would swell the aggre- gate to forty-five millions of dollars The shipments of epecie and bullion from this port to foreign countries, figure up more than thirty-three millions of dollars, which, deducted from the amount of California gold de- posited im the Mint, leaves a balance of little more than two and @ half millions im ourfavor. So far as this com- parative statement shows anything, it appears that we have been the distributors of California gold to foreign countrics—that we have sent it abroad nearly as fast as we have received it—that it has merely passed through this city on ite way from San Francisco, to the great mo, ney markets of Europe. Very little has remained among us; and, at this rate, it would take a great many years to give us any addition of consequence to our stock of pre- cious metals. The only hope we have, amidst all thi, epparent activity in gold, is,that there may be @ large amount of bullion in the interior, in the hands of those | Who have brought it direct from California, and have Kept it in their possession. The metalic currency of the | country may be increased and improved by the amount thus retained among us. The annexed statement will settle all doubts as to the utility of remitting gold to Europe, in lieu of sterling bills at current quotations: — A Sare or Amen Gorn Eacurs ix Dupe — $100.00, weighing 6.374 ounces 12 grains, at 766. 23.4. per ounce .. This ia the smallest amount entered for consumption, and withdrawn from warehouse, any single week this year. Tha value of foreign dry goods put upon the market, up to Nov. Ist, 1851, was $54.709,631, against $54,058,239 during the same period in 18€0, showing an increase this year of only $51,992. The importations in October, this year, were $407,187 less than im the same month last year, and from the returns received thus far for November, we should judge that the value of foreign dry goods entered during the month, would be comparatively limited. ‘The valae of dry goods entered for warehousing in October, 1851, was $584 759 against $339,647 during the same month in 1850, showing an increase for the month this year of $646,092. This more than offsets the decrease in the quantity put onthe market. A comparison, therefore, Cf the entries of foreign dry goods at this port, for the month of October, 1851, for consumption and for ware. housing, compared with those fer the corresponding mouth in 1850, shows a variation of only $137,905 in the aggregates, The importation cf foreign dry goods, for tome time to come, is likely to be limited. The tight nese in the money market, large and steady shipments of specie, and present supply of foreign manufactures, must tend to restrict erders, and materially check ship- ments from the other side on foreign account. The Vicksburg Whig, of a recent date, contains the fol- road Bank of Vicksburg :—“Several years since, the upon the assets of the Commercial and Railroad ik of Vicksburg, for the State and county taxes, (over $100,- 000,) assesved against the bank. To prevent a sale of the aseets, an injunction was sued cut by the bank. The cause was argued, and Chancellor Cocke, a few days since, delivered the opinion of the Court, and dissolved the injunction. We presume tbat the case will be taken up.
