HFE 15 TRAGED 600000000 YEARS New Found Fossil Ranges U- corered in Australia Sydney, Australla, Oct. § UP—That animal i was already welt ad. vanced 600,000,000 years ago is the theory advanced by Profeasor Sir Edgeworth David, who has found in the rocks of the Mount Lofty and Flinders ranges of South Aus- tralia perfectly preserved specimend of animals many million years older than any so far classified by science. The newly-found fossils range through a thickneas of at least 10,- 000 feet of stratum, and include many animals entirely new to sci- ence. The organisms nave highly evolved locomotor appendages and spiral gills for breathing air dis- solved in water. These are s0 com- plex that, assuming life to have commenced in the very simplest of forms, the fauna would be placed about nine-tenths of the way up the life column, Many of the foasils are well pre- served portions of the harder skele- tons of animals allied to the sand- ‘worm, the shrimp-like creatures, and the crayfish of modern times Other forms of animal life are, how- ever, also present. The chitin, or horny substance ot which their limbs and shells are : formed has scarcely - ailtefed aince it covered live organisms millions of years ago, and is most beautifully colored. The color range varies from delicate rose madder to pale bronsze greens. 8o perfect are ‘the speci- mens that sclence will be enabled to know much more about this re- mote period of life than those much more recent.
