This wunl learned yesterday when . the mayor halted criminal proceedings brought against the young couple by Poor- master® Murray, who .charges them with abandonment and desertlon, The baby, Dorathy Helen, was born in the Bergen Sanitarium. Mrs, Rich maintains that hospital attendants told her she was the mother of a hoy. This had been her wish. Her baby was taken away and brought to her the next day. A week later she was told she was the mother of a girl. When Mrs. Rich appeared before Acting Judge Daniel O'Regan in the first Criminal Court yesterday she| showed the effects of the ordeal she went through Wednesday when she at first started to take the baby in attorney, Charles Simpson, Judge O'Regan allowed Mr, and Mrs. Rich to depart without bail be- cause of a communication from the mayor in which he informed the court he was opposed to criminal action because it might reflect upon the child in after life, The mayor said he had been in- vestigating and believed he had facts which would convince the parents the child was theirs. He asked that the court proceedings be held up until after a conference in his office Mon- day. Those expected to attend are Mr, and Mrs. Rich, thelr attorney, Paormaster Murray and physicians from the sanitarium, Just what evidence will be used ghe mayor did not reveal.
