NEW BRITAIN DAILY HERALD, FRIDAY, that will establish good music as an every day need. “It is necessary for people to have an interest in life outslde of thelr oc- cupation,” sald Mr, Eastman in com- menting upon the enterprise, "I be- Iteve that working hours are going to be shortened in order that people may llve fuller and happier lives, What in going to be done with the leisure thus obtained? I am not at all of the opinion that people have been ground down by industry. Lelsure {s unfruit- ful because we do not know how to use it productively. Do not imagine from what I say that I am a reforr- er—far from that. I am interested In music personally, and I am led thereby to want to share my pleasure with others, “For many years I have heen con- nected with musical organizations in Rochester. 1 have come to see fhat what we need is a body of trained listeners quite ag much as a body of trained performers. Without appre- clation, without the presence of a large body of people who understand music and who get joy out of it, any attempt to develop the musical re- sources of any city is doomed to failure. Because in Rochester weq realize this,” we have undertaken & scheme for building musical capacity on a large scale from childhood. Music Essential. “I" do not imagine that muslec is going to occupy &ll of the leisure in- terests of people. I know that my, own ipterests are varied. I am fend of athletics. All sorts of sports, rec- reations and diversions must be de- veloped if we are to make full use of our lefsure. In this field certginly it is not a case of righting old wrongs but of creating something entirely new. Interests must be built up if we are to get the happiest use of leisure. Incidentally, in the pulsuance of this ideal I should like to see Rochester become a great musical center, know throughout the entire world.” Entrance to the theater is by the way of a commodious lobby finished in rich marble and bronze. The mas- sive auditorium abounds in exquisite marbles, sculptural reliefs and rich hangings. The decorative scheme is Italian renaissance, Venetian in treat- ment. When the playhouse opens it will mark the end of motion picture pres- entation in the dark, according to the experts assoclated with its construc- tion. Through the lghting system, the hazard of a gloomy auditorium will be eliminated. The theater will be sufficiently well {lluminated so that patrons may read without dis- comfort and at the same time view the film without any visionary effort The theater will serve also as a medium of expremsion for the hun- dreds of pupils of the Eastman school of music, OVSTERS KILLEDIN L07S OF HILLIONS But Two Out of That Amount Usually Reach Opener London, Oct. 6.—So numerous and rapaclous are the enemies at large in the sea of the young oyster, that the British Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries estimates that only two out of 1,000,000 young oysters ever reach the knife of the oyster opener. The remainder of the million fall vic- tim to the attacks of thelr foes. It is never the oyster's fault it oysters are scarce. The oyster is a generous provider. It makes no fuss over producing a million at a birth. That sort of thing is just all in the day’s work with the oyster. But the enemies of the oyster never take a day off. They are the hosts that prey on ‘“oyster fry” as it f{s called by oyster cultivators. Water Is Sterilized. The heavy percentage of loss be- tween birth and maturity moved the ministry to take steps of protection. On the coast of Wales, at Conway, it established an experimental station where the scientist in charge, Dr. Dodgson, is said to have succeeded a number of times in keeping alive and bringing to maturity 100,000 oysters out of every million born. His suc- cess was due mainly to the fact that he sterilized the water in which the oysters bred. ‘“The enemies of the young oysters,” Dr. Dodgson explaina, ‘‘are numerous, but mostly small, and by sterilizing the water before putting the oysters in to breed, all the enemies of the young are killed off and the voung are then free to attach th9m<9|’\ es to a suitable surface. “The experiments have been gsuc- cessful for four years in succession and if they prove successful on a larger scale, English oyster lovers are looking forward to a more abundant and cheaper supply of the native pro- duct.” HAVE PRAYER ANSWERED Chinese Hold Meetings and Ask' for Rain, Continued Drouths Having | Aroused Fears in Honan.
