Gamache, the resident priest, came here six years ago, and was the tirst resident priest in this locality. There are about sixty families in mem- bership. Besides performing his du- ties. here Father Gamache attends to the missions at Hibbing, Swan River and Deer River, and also visits the lumber camps and does much other work outside of Grand Rapids. The church edifice is large and commodi- ous, and both it and the priest’s resi- dence were built since Father Gamache came here, th2old church having been destroyed by tire after he had been here a year, and there was no resi- dence at that time. Father Gamache has been very industrious and success- ful in his work. 7 2 VILLA SCHOLASTICA ACADEMY. This isa select: school, and is also under the supervision of the Benedic- tine Sisters of Duluth. Sister Berna- dette has direct charge of the school. Rey. Father Valentine Stimmler, ©. S.B., ischaplain. There are twenty-six pupils in attendance. A view of the handsome academy and its picturesque location’ appears on this page. Itisa well managed institution, and its pa- trens are exceedingly well satisfied with the work done there. “ 9T, BENEDICT’S HOSPITAL. The above-named hospital is one block east of the county court house in Grand Rapids, and isa very excellent institution. The building is hand- some, well arranged and of. sufticient size. Its appearance is shown by.fa picture on this page. (The hospital is under the general charge of Mother Superior Scholastica. of Duluth, rep- resenting the Sisters of St. Benedict. Sister Augustine has local charge, and Rey. Father Valentine Stimmler, O. S. B., is chaplain. There are at the time of this writing thirty-four patients in the hospital, which has been under the present very successful manage- ment since July, 1898. THE THREE PICTURES.
