The affairs of the county are being managed economically, and taxation is being reduced. There is a fine court house that cost $60,000, a sheriff’s res- idence and jail that cost $25,000, and a farm for the poor worth about $18,000. The farm is one and a half miles west of Grand Rapids. The superintend- ent is Thos. A. McHugh. The county physician is Dr. Thomas Russell. The average number of inmates is three, all disabled, as there are no needy poor in this county who are able to work. The county is assessed at $3,500,000, but the real value is fully $10,000,000. GOOD WORK DONE. Chas. H. Dickinson, the genial drug- gist for the Itasca Mercantile Compa- ny, made the pictures for nearly all of the: tewn views in this book, repre- senting Grand Rapids, Deer River and Cohasset. He did very excellent work. The most of the river, lake and coun- try views were kindly furnished by I. D. Rassmussen, C. L. Pratt, Mrs. O. H. Stilson, W. E. Neal and others. Deputy Sheriff Chas. Kearney gave a good picture of Grand Rapids as it looked in 1889. It appears at the top page 16. Joseph Crowther, of Cohas- set, furnished some nice lake and coun- try views, including the spicy picture of Chief Bob-e-dash on page 12. John Rellis, of Swan River, furnished the nice Swan River view on page 32. RESIDENCE OF E. A. KREMER. |
