As may be seen by the map on the second page of the cover of this book, Deer River is on the Eastern Railway of Minne- sota, 126 miles from Duluth and four- teen miles northwest of Grand Rapids. It is also at the southern terminus of the Itasca Logging Railway Compa- ny’s line of road, which extends north- ward toward the Big Fork country, with twenty-two miles now in opera- tion. The last ten miles of the piece of road now. in operation will not be part of the main line, however, when the road is completed, but will bea spur extending in a northeasterly di- rection from the main line. At a point twelve miles from Deer River on this railway grading was started last sea- son and was completed ten miles in a [ss RIVER occupies a position northerly direction to Turtle lake. In June of the present year track will be laid on this new grade, giving the road as completed up to that time the shape of a “Y.’’ During the season more grading will be done northward from Turtle lake down the Big Fork valley. The distance to be graded this year has not yet been definitely fixed. Next year the track will be ex- tended as far as the grading is com- pleted at that time, and the following year the road will be completed to Koochiching on the northern bounda- ry of the state. This road will open up to rapid development the whole Big Fork region, but the most of the government land will be taken before the arrival of the railroad. The best of it will undoubtedly be taken during the present season. EDUCATIONAL MATTERS. The picture on this page of the ele- gant new school building in Deer Riy- er is proof that the people do not intend to neglect educational matters. This large and handsome structure proclaims better than words the pro- gressive and up-to-date character of the people. In the picture Prof. A. C. Yoder and his small group of pupils are seen standing in front of the building. Prof. Yoder is the only teacher, although the building con- tains rooms for four large depart- ments, and could easily accommodate tive times as many pupils as there are at present. The new school building was completed last December, and the tirst term of school in it is nowin progress. These facts are important, showing as they do that the people who are here understand that the time has come for the development of THE OLD SCHOOL BUILDING AT DEER RIVER.
