Georgetown Cifizens’ Association Urges Traffic Relief Recommendations Include M Street Rush-Hour Parking Ban Buggestions for relieving con- gestion on M street during business hours were adopted by the George- town Citizens’ Association at its meeting last night in the St. John’s Church Hall. John H. Ihlder presented the re- port of the chairman of the Traffic Committee, J. B. Wyckoff, who was unable to be present. A motion was approved to suggest to the District Commissioners that they consider a plan to demolish the old Georgetown market, which is owned by the Dis- trict, and use the market lot plus the three surrounding alleyways as parking space. The parking lot, it was suggested, could be run by the District to provide free parking for customers of the stores in that shop- ping neighborhood, or it could be leased to a private operator. Other recommendations to the Commissioners include parking bans on the south side of M street during the morning rush hours and on the north side during the heavy after- noon traffic, and one-hour parking on M street and on other streets within two blocks of M during the non-rush hours of the day. Would Change Car Stops. Mr. Thlder’s last motion, also passed, recommended that the street car stop now located on Wisconsin avenue at M street N.W. be moved to M street (the southeast corner of that intersection) and consolidated with the car stop now on the south- west corner. E. M. Bradley, chairman of the Executive Committee, proposed re- vision of the present District build- ing code, and cited the recent fire on O street. Additional funds for the building inspector’s office to main- tain a sufficiently large staff were suggested. The motion was approved unanimously. A letter by the secretary to the American Automobile Association protesting the refusal to permit Ad- miral Spencer C. Wood, the invited representative of the association, to enter the reviewing stand in the re- cent safety patrol parade was ap- proved. Probe on Dues Authorized. A motion directing the president of the association to appoint a com- mittee to investigate unpaid dues was passed. The committee will be headed by I. B. Nordlinger. A motion by Jehn H. Doyle pro- ; testing a change in the name of Jefferson street N.W. was approved. A letter to the Secretary of the| Interior asking further considera- tion of two possible playground sites desired by the group also was ap- proved. Randle B. Truett, chief of the me- morial section of the National Capi- tal Park and Planning Commission, spoke on the historic value of some old Georgetown buildings. O, TUE.SDAY,‘ MAY 28, 1940. Nature’s Children Grand Canyon Rattlesnake (Crotalus viridis abyssus) By LILLIAN COX ATHEY. In the Grand Canyon of the Colorado River in Arizons, one of the most mild-mannered rattle- snakes has been found. It seems to have no fear of man, since it has not been so hunted and stoned as its cousins. Its reastion to the presence of man is complete indif- ference, or if prodded, a mere hiss of annoyance. The Grand Canyon rattlesnake has through the centuries adapted itself to its environment. All forms of life in the deepening gorge differ greatly from their original ancestral type. The cousins on the north side of the canyon have changed to meet the various conditions, but south of the canyon the cousins have re- tained the original type and have become our prairie rattlesnake. Down in the canyon and on the rim will be found the third cousin, the Grand Canyon rattlesnake itself, until recently unknown. The cli- mate is more arid, the temperature higher, the growth on the floor more desertlike. Even the small animals have changed to conform with their environment. So we find that this reptile has replaced the ancestral olive and yellowish shades for bright vermil- ion or salmon and the “saddle- marks” along the back are becoming more dull as the years go by. Living conditions on the canyon rims, roads and trails, over which travel is becoming more frequent, are such that occasionally canyon rattlers have been seen, and in some cases killed. Man, still being a snake’s worst enemy though he should be his friend, cannot resist the desire to destroy something he has been taught to believe is detri- mental to his welfare.
