NEW YORK, May 28 —Corporate bond prices followed foreign gov- ernment loans to lower levels today on the news of the surrender by King Leopold of the Belgians. German government liens were among the few exceptions to the downward trend toward the close. The rate of trading was limited throughout the day. Loans with a speculative rating took the worst drubping. United States Governments lost as much as !2 point or more. Belgian bonds plunged around 7| points on the average. Canadian loans lost 2 points or more and | selected Japanese issues an outside of 5 points. Domestic corporates under fire in-~ cluded International Telephone 5s, Studepaker 6s, Frisco 4l>s of '78, Kansas City Southern 3s, Baltimore & Ohio stamped convertibles and General Steel Castings 51s. Utilities Power & Light liens| sagged 5 to 8 points in light deal- ings. Canadian National Railway and Canadian Pacific bonds gave up round 4 points. Pressure let up toward the finish in the domestic list and extreme losses were pared in many cases. Foreign issues, however, enced near the day's lows. Chicago Grain By the Associated Press. CHICAGO, May from Europe sent a selling chill| through the grain market today but after prices had tumbled 3 cents & bushel in the wheat pit and 1 or 2 cents in other pits, they rallied &s traders regained their composure. The early break carried values down to within fractions to 21 cents of the minimum pegs below which trading rules prohibit any transactions. As these levels were approached selling diminished and late in the session renewed buying, attributed partly to consuming in- terests, helped the recovery. NEW YORK, May 28.—Cotton fu- tures recovered sharply today after breaking close to $2.50 a bale in early trading. After heavy foreign and domestic selling and unsatis- factory news from Belgium, prices shot back quickly. Trade, mill buying and covering, principally in the July position, re- flected the tight spot situation and accounted for the improvement. British announcement of further restrictions on American cotton im- ports was unsettling, however, and late prices, although around the highs of the session, still were off 8 $0 22 points, with July (old) at 9.54; October, 8.72, and March at 841, Putures closed 6-19 lower. NEW YORK, May 28.—American marine insurance underwriters to- day withdrew all rate schedules for war risk insurance on shipments be- tween the Western Hemisphere and the English east coast north of Southampton and the French coast north of Brest. The underwriters announced that shippers desiring war risk coverage on such voyages could obtain rates “only on application.” The rate on ocean shipments to other United Kingdom ports, to Ire- land and to Brest was fixed at 314 per cent of the value of the cargo, while the rate on shipments from those ports was fixed at 3 per cent. Many issues jumped 10 to 30 points. Stocks of two metallurgical companies soared 65 and 82 points. Financial circles attributed the rise to growing confidence that realization of Italian “aspirations” was near in view of the military situation in the north. Chicago Produce CHICAGO. Fifteen items included in the food group decljned during the week, while only two advanced. The farm any time since the sharp advance last September took place. Lower quotations for petroleum and fuel oil resulted in a drop in the fuel price average. The textile index again moved downward, reflecting lower quota- tions for cotton textiles and yarn, burlap and raw silk. Declining prices for copper and for brass products, which more than offset advances in steel scrap, silver and tin, caused a slight drop in the in- dex of metal prices.
