Thr; blaze was confined to a por- ter's room, but smoke poured out, filling the corridor on that floor and seeping into offices in other parts of the building. Miss Vern Fitzpatrick, a telephone operator at the Columbia Broadcast- ing System—on the eighth floor of TUESDAY, the building—saw flames shooting through qm areaway and called fire- men. Announcers and esngineers of the Columbia system—which had no local program on the air at the time —attempted to fight the fire with extinguishers, In the meantime J. A. Johnson of 627 Newton place .W., an elevator operator, turned in an alarm on the corner, Firemen remained for nearly an hour and damage was estimated at $200. The campaign offices of Paul V. McNutt, on the same floor, were not damaged. ‘The audience in the Earle Theater, in the same building, knew nothing of the fire at the time. Man Dies of Burns After Fire in Home James Simpson, 51, who lived alone at Hillside, Md., died yesterday in Casualty Hospital, following burns received from a mysterious fire at his home earlier in the day. A neighbor, paying a visit, found Mr. Simpson sitting on the side of fits'bed with his clethes burned from nis body. He was unable to give a coherent explanation of the burning to police.
