A Much-Discussed Hand Today’s hand, taken from the re- cent Vanderbilt Cup Tournament, created a great deal of discussion. At one table South opened with a psychic bid of one heart and sub- sequently played the hand at seven, down three. At the other table South passed originally and eventu- ally became declarer at four hearts, making five. South, dealer, East-West vulnerable. A5 North, 44 ™ South, 19 3V West. Pass Pass 54 Pass Pass Pass In the various discussions raging about the hand it was pointed out that six hearts was a reasonably Pass good contract for North and South, | since this contract could be made by means of a successful finesse in trumps or for the king of clubs. It was then pointed out, however, that six diamonds was an even better contract, since this slam could be made by cashing the ace of spades, ruffing a spade, drawing trumps and conceding a trick to the queen of hearts, declarer eventually making five diamonds, four hearts, two black aces and a ruff. Peter Rabbit’s party promised to be a great success. Sammy Jay had tried his best to break it up by shouting that Bowser the Hound was coming, when he wasn’t com- ing at all. But old Mr. Toad, who had overheard Sammy Jay’s plan, had told Peter Rabbit all about it and Peter Rabbit had told all the other little meadow folks and for- est people, so that when Sammy gave the false alarm everybody just laughed. Mr. Todd had also told Peter Rabbit that in an old hollow log close by Reddy Fox and Shadow the ‘Weasel were hiding. Peter had whis- pered the news in the ear of each of the little forest and meadow peo- ple and had told them how Pricklv Porky was even then ‘sitting with his back against the opening in the hollow log. Every one had thought this the best joke ever, for of course all knew that Reddy Fox and Shadow the Weasel could not get out past the thousand little spears hidden in the long coat of Pricklv Porky. Prickly Porky settled himself very comfortable and began to tell stories about his home way up in the north woods. Every few minutes he would rattle the thousand little spears in MAKE TH' TRIP OVER HERE FAST-- NOW LET'S SEE-- VYEAH -- THAT'S THE SIDE WHERE 2 PEOPLE SEND BIRTHDAY GREETING TELEGRAMS AND 'z YoU SING THEM AND_ £235 YOU GET TEN CENTS FOR 25 his coat and though no one could see Reddy Fox and Shadow the Weasel inside the hollow log every one wuld guess just how little shivers were running up and down the backbones of the two little scamps held prisoners there, Prickly Porky told how in the cold, cold winter the snow piled up and piled up in his far northern home until nearly all the forest folk who live there had to make a long Jjourney to the South or else went into warm, snug hollows in the trees or caves in the rocks and slept the long winter through, just as Johnny Ky COME ON, DAN oL BoV Y/ YOU'LL, MAKE 1T » 7.\ '4fl HAPPY BlmbAYm Yo You - HAPPY BIRTHDAY Yo You - Chuck does. He told how the In- dians came through the great for- est on big webbed shoes that kept them from sinking into snow and hunted for Lightfoot the Deer and how they never bothered Prickly Porky, but always treated him with the greatest respect. He told so many, many interesting things about the great north woods that all the little meadow people and forest folk gathered close around to listen. Every few minutes while he was talking he would shake his thousand little spears and then every one would smile, BJUDDENLY, IRWIN GLANCES DOWN-- SEES THE FRAYING CABLE-- SBIN GOLOEISH! TH' CABLE’S WEARIN IN TWO--1 GOTTA DO SOMETHIN'-- Inside the hollow log Reddy Fox was getting stiff and sore, because, you know, he didn’t have room enough even to turn over. Worse still he was so hungry that he could cry. You see he had crept in there very early in the morning without any breakfast, because he had planned that when Sammy Jay should break up Peter Rabbit's party he would steal all the good things he wanted. Now he could smell them and hear the others talking about the feast they were going to have, and he knew that OON'T MAKE ;NOE CABLE SWAY LESS TO SAVE HER. AH/ By Norman Marsh QREANTIME, THE MAN WO ENTERED THE BLACK HOOD5 OFEICES AND FROM WHOM OAN HID ON THE LEDGE OUTS/DE THE WINDOW, RETURNS—HE SEES DAN ON THE CABLE.! ; THAT PERSON: COULD HE HAVE BEEN IN THIS OFFICE--I MUST TAKE NO CHANCES-- not so much as a tiny, tiny crumb would be left for him when Prickly Porky should choose to let him out. Shadow the Weasel felt just as uncomfortable as Reddy Fox and Shadow is very short tempered. Every time Reddy moved and squeezed Shadow would’ snap at him. Now, of course, they could hear everything that was said out- side, and the things that were said were not pleasant to listen to. Bobby Coon and Billy Mink and Johnny Chuck and Little Joe Otter and Jimmy Skunk told about all the mean things and all the sharp tricks that Reddy Fox and Shadow had done. It made the two little pris~ oners so angry that they ground their teeth, but every time they made the least little movement Prickly Porky would shake his thou- sand little spears and settle himself still more firmly it the open- ing in the hollow log. certainly was enjoying himself. It tickled him almost to pieces to think how - easily he had trapped smart Reddy Fox, the boaster. B So they waited all the long day— for the coming of Unc’ Billy Pos- sum'’s family.
