CHAPTER TWO. “Hell, Il take a chance,” Pete Yeager said. “Jim Silcott is no- body’s fool. He's on his way.” The fat little Hat T rider waddled out of the shadows and knelt down be- side the prone body. A few mo- ments later he made his report. “Plumb dead. Shot through the heart, looks like.” Out of saloons and stores men trickled. They picked up the sprawled figure and carried it into the Trail's End. Yeager looked down at the long body lying on a bench, “He sure was asking for it,” Pete #aid. “Started the rookus tonight and the rest of us came in to back him.” Prentiss looked at him with sour anger. “What you mean, Buck started it? Silcott lay in wait for us and plugged Buck before we could stop him. Sure as I'm a foot high I'll get him for this.” Yeager grinned cynically. So that was to be the story. “I meant that Buck was the first one he began shooting at,” he explained. Anne walked into the stage office, her long legs a little shaky. She sat down on a drygoods box. Of course the boys kick up their heels some after dark, but they don’t mean a thing. Just high spirits.” “Is . .. is the man dead?” “I heard some one say he wasq’ The girl did not discuss the matter further. “My name is Anne Eliot, Can you tell me where the hotel is?" The princi- pal rooming house was over the | Jumbo saloon, but it was no place | for a lady. All night long an in- ferno of noise rose from the dance hall. “Ma Russell runs a boarding house. I dunno whether she fis full up or not. I'll take you round there.” “If it isn't too much trouble, Mr. Benson.” Place Is Made For Anne. Anne was agreeably surprised at Mrs. Russell. She was a good- looking plump woman who radiated health and friendliness. Though all her rooms were taken she at once said she would find a place for Anne. “I'll make Rufe Jelks move over to the Jumbo,” she said. And she added, slanting a look at the gril. “Will you be staying long? I mean, will you want the room some time?” CHECK UGLY “Pleased to meet you, miss. My® THE EVENING STAR, WASHINGTON, T havi made up my mind. And I don’t like to drive another lodger from you.” The landlady made nothing of that. “Rufe is in town only a few days, and he doesn't care where he sleeps. But you can't stay at the Jumbo. Some crazy drunk is likely to start shooting up the street in the night.” “They don’t always wait for night, do they?” Anne suggested. “Youwere there waen Buck Sneve was killed?” Mrs. Rusell said quickly. “Yes. It was just as the stage got in. Do you know what it was about?” “Oh, about the land grants, I sup- pose. The feeling is bitter because 80 many people’s property is in- volved. If it is any comfort to you, Buck Sneve was a bad man. He de- served what he got. Red had to kill him t6 save himself.” “Yes, I saw that.” Anne did not know why, but from the first mo- ment she had seen the lift of the | red head she had been on his side. Rufe Glad to Move. Most of those at the table were brown, boyish cow- boys in from the range for a day or two. An exception was the man | sitting opposite her, who wore well- | made city clothes and had a cold, impassive face, almost colorless. fAnne caught his name as Kroelling | when he was introduced. Entrance Halts Talk. The girl was aware that her en- | trance had put a damper on the | conversation. They had been talk- ing about the shooting on Main street. It was the big news of the day and might be the precursor of even more important developments, but out of deference to the young lady they did not want to discuss it in her presence. She had been a witness and her nerves might be unstrung. Only Kroelling and Rufe Jelks | helped Mrs. Russell and Anne carry the talk. The professional gambler asked the newcomer how she liked the town. “How could she like it when she hadn’t been here three minutes be- fore there was gun trouble right before her eyes?” Mrs. Russell asked severely. “Such goings on ought to be stopped, if we expect decent people to stay here.” “That's right, ma'm . .. Sure. .. Y'betcha.” The chorus of approval was unan- imous. But the landlady was not deceived as to its value. “Every last one of you carries a gun all the time,” she snapped. “Not in town, Ma,” protested the black-haired puncher whom Anne hed djspossessed, with the manner of one who has been most unjustly accused. “I done parked mine at the Trivoli when I blew in. Course I got to have one for rattlers out- side.” Mrs. Russell looked at him sharply over her glasses. “Rufe Jelks, you're not loading me any. I've known you since you were knee-high to a duck. Yo and your side partner, Jim Silcott, are a pair of the wildest coots in this territory.” Rufe looked as innocent as a choir boy. “We've reformed, ma’am. Now we've grown up we've put away childish things.” Doubt is Eloquent. The landlady’s grunt was eloquent of doubt. Talk died down again, except for undertones among the men. Topics that would include Miss Eliot were few. They could not ask her where she came from nor what she was doing in this raw town, nor how long she expected to stay. For the first article in the unwritten book of manners of the old West was that a stranger must not be asked personal questions. Too many re- sidents had come out one Jump ahead of the law. After supper Anne asked Mrs. Russell where the office of the “Powder Horn Sentinel” was. “I'd like to walk down there this even- ing,” she added. “I'll get some one to show you '\ A She thanked him. A smile in her | the landlady said, and she stepped out to the porch. Her eye fell on Rufe Jelks. “Do you think you can take a young lady down to the office of the ‘Sentinel’ and bring her back safely?” she asked. His face lit. “Oh lady, try me.” On the way to the office Anne gathered information. This was a cattle country, though there was a good deal of mining in the hills. The | big outfit, she learned, was the Hat T, owned by Russ Mosely, though there were a good many other much smaller ranches but of fair size. It was a fine country for those who liked the high plains. 3 “What is this land-grant feud I hear about?” Anne asked. Gandara Easy Going. “Its a long story which goes back to the old Spanish days when the king of Spain gave great grants of lands, through his governor, to grandeees who were supposed to have served the country in war. A grant covering a big part of this district was given to Don Jose Gan- dara, who by what I hear was quite a guy. He had money enough to burn a wet mule, and he fed at his different rancheros hundreds of va- queros and servants every day. Seems Gandara didn’t put much stock in this little gift of a million acres more or less. Those were free and easy days, and a man didn’t fool much with recording his deeds and that sort of thing. He just stuck ‘em in a box and forgot about it. The story is that Gandara slept on his rights. “After Mexico had freed itself from Spain, Gov. Armijo carved a big chunk of half a million acres or 50 put of this grant and gave it to another bird named Antonio Agui- lar, who peddled bits of it to cattle- men coming into the country. That started a rookus, for a smooth smil- ing crook named Russ Moseiy had already hopped down to Mexico C!ty and bought out the Gandara heirs for about a dollar and a quarter.” “I read bits of this in stray copies of the ‘Sentinal’ that came to me,” Anne said. “It seems the ‘Sentinal’ was on the side of the Armijo grant- ees.” Learns Editor Was killed. “Was and is,” Jelks answered. “Red Silcott took up the fight where Rogers dropped it when he was kil- led.” The girl stopped in her tracks and stared at him, dismay in her face. “Kliled?” she repeated. “Yes, miss,” he said gently. “Shot down from ambush as he was leav- | ing the office one night.” “I didn’t know that,” she said in a low voice. “Mr. Silcott wrote that he had died and he would carry on till Ilet him know what I wanted to do.” ’ Looking into her face, Rufe Jelks knew now who this stranger was. She was the niece who had inherited the ‘Sentinal’ from her uncle. The girl continued to look at him, the color drained from her cheeks. “You called him Red Silcott. Was it Mr. Silcott they were shooting at this afternoon?” “Yes.” “They mean to kill him too then?” “That’s the notion they have tucked in their nuts.” Jelks smiled, grimly. “They haven't got away with it yet.” “Who are these murderers?” “The Hat T ranch.” sn't there any law in this coun- try.” “Heaps of it, most of it owned by Russ Mosely, the grand mogul at the Hat T.” “But I won't have it,” she said quickly. “I won't be responsible for a man in my employ getting Killed. He'll have to go away— at once.” “Tell that to Red Silcott,” he said dryly. (To be continued.)
